Poll: Florida Republicans Don’t Support Mid-Decade Redistricting
A new poll from Common Cause shows Floridians across political affiliations reject mid-decade redistricting, with 55 percent of Floridians saying they oppose the move. That includes 60 percent of independents in opposition, and a leading plurality of Republicans at 45 percent opposition (and only 36 percent support).
“In very clear terms, our poll shows even Republicans in Florida do not support mid-decade redistricting,” said Amy Keith, Common Cause Florida Executive Director. “Floridians do not want the legislature to waste their time and our taxpayer dollars trying to make our voting maps even more gerrymandered than they already are. The legislature should follow the data and stop their work on this issue. Floridians want them to focus on the real issues impacting our lives, like the cost of groceries, housing and insurance.”
Findings show broad opposition to mid-decade redistricting from Democrats, Republicans, and independents (voters with “no party affiliation” in Florida)—including voters who supported Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election.
Florida Poll Highlights:
- An overwhelming majority of voters in Florida (76%), support independent commissions made up of citizens to draw district lines instead of state lawmakers.
- As mentioned, 55 percent of Floridians reject mid-decade redistricting. Breakdown by party ID is as follows: Republicans voters show 45%oppose, 36% support / independent or no affiliation voters show 60% oppose and 14% support / Democratic voters show 62% oppose, 25% support.
- A majority of Floridians support Congress banning maps that favor one political party (66%) and the same percentage support Congress banning mid-decade redistricting (66%). This includes majorities of Donald Trump voters and voters who identify as Republican.
Common Cause commissioned Noble Predictive Insights to conduct multiple polls on redistricting, including a 2,016 person national poll and a 499 person Florida poll. The poll was in the field Aug 26 – Sep 2.
