Watchdog Group Demands Congress Stop Illegal Iran War, Pass War Powers Resolution

Common Cause is calling on Congress to assert its constitutional authority and hold the Trump Administration accountable for its unauthorized and illegal use of U.S. military forces in Iran.

Washington, D.C. — Common Cause is calling on Congress to assert its constitutional authority and hold the Trump Administration accountable for its unauthorized and illegal use of U.S. military forces in Iran.

The action was taken without congressional authorization and represents a dangerous and unconstitutional expansion of presidential power that risks American lives, credibility, and long-term national interests.

Statement from Common Cause President & CEO Virginia Kase Solomón:

First Venezuela, now Iran. How many more times does President Trump have to illegally attack a foreign nation before Congress finally does its job and says one man can’t unilaterally start a war?

The American people should never be dragged into an open-ended conflict without a formal authorization from their elected representatives.

This is a blatant attempt from a power-hungry president to put Americans’ lives in danger to consolidate his own power and distract from the issues here at home: like the Epstein crimes, outrage over ICE’s violence, and the affordability crisis. It’s shameful and unacceptable.

Congress must not stand by. Its immediate responsibility is clear: pass a War Powers Resolution to stop this illegal war.
