Common Cause Maryland veranstaltete am Donnerstag eine Geburtstagsfeier für Elbridge Gerry, der als erster Politiker die dunkle Kunst der parteipolitischen Manipulation von Parlamentsgrenzen perfektionierte. Gerry, ehemaliger Vizepräsident und Gouverneur von Massachusetts, unterzeichnete während seiner Amtszeit seltsam geformte Wahlkreise, die die Mehrheit seiner Partei im Parlament festigen sollten. Die Boston Gazette zeichnete 1812 eine politische Karikatur, in der einer der Wahlkreise mit einem Salamander verglichen und als „Gerrymander“ bezeichnet wurde.
