Donald Trump is whipping up his supporters against vote-by-mail — spouting misinformation and fearmongering to block this proven reform.
Why? The president recently admitted it outright to Fox & Friends: he believes that if every eligible American is able to cast their vote, “you’d never have a Republican elected in this country again.”
That’s right — the President of the United States openly stated that he doesn’t care if Americans are denied one of their most fundamental rights in our democracy… as long as it benefits him and his party.
Our election systems need serious reform if we want to protect voters’ rights and their wellbeing during the COVID-19 crisis. That includes implementing online voter registration, extending early voting hours, and — of course — expanding vote-by-mail programs where possible.
But Trump is now urging GOP lawmakers to block this pro-voter agenda because, according to him, it “doesn’t work out well for Republicans.” This completely ignores the fact that many Republican officials support vote-by-mail — and that red states have successfully implemented these and similar reforms.
