ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The Vice President of Internal Operations will oversee operations activities in the organization, ensuring development of efficient operational and cost-effective systems to meet current and future needs of the organization. 


Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Plans, directs, and coordinates operations activities.
  • Recruits, interviews, hires, and trains staff in the operations department.
  • Oversees the daily workflow of the department.
  • Provides constructive and timely performance evaluations.

Leadership Team Responsibilities:

  • Collaborates with executive leadership to develop and meet the organization’s goals while supplying expertise and guidance on operations projects and systems.
  • Works with Management Team on national events and meetings (including but not limited to National Governing Board meetings, staff retreats, and conferences). 
  • Collaborates with other divisions and departments to carry out organizational goals and objectives. 
  • Works in collaboration with the VP (Vice President) of People, Equity, and Inclusion to ensure our operations are equitable.

Daily Operations 

    • Ensures that departmental decisions and project plans such as those for staffing, development, organization, material efficiency, hardware acquisitions, and facilities are in line with the organization’s strategy, plans, and vision.
    • Establishes, communicates, and implements operations-related policies, practices, standards, and security measures to ensure effective and consistent support and execution. 
    • Ensures the organization’s offices have the equipment and supplies needed to function properly.
    • Identifies training needs and ensures proper training is developed and provided.

Human Resources

    • Works in coordination with the Human Resources Director to ensure office policies and procedures are standardized across the organization.

Constituent Services

    • Works with partners to develop support systems with those outside the organization, such as vendors, partner organizations, and employee benefit providers.


    • Oversees the work of our IT team to meet the needs of Common Cause staff.
    • Identifies, recommends, and implements new processes, technologies, and systems to improve and streamline organizational processes and use of resources and materials.
    • Monitors and maintains knowledge of emerging technologies and trends in operations management.

Safety and Return to In-person Work

    • Monitors and ensures staff safety by chairing the COVID/Return to Work Safely Working Group as we continue to navigate the health challenges of the global pandemic and develop hybrid models for remote and in person work; works with State Operations to ensure state staff have safe working spaces. Collaborates with executive leadership around safety training for staff, including online and offline.
    • Works with building management at the Washington, D.C. office and ensures a safe working space for staff. Negotiates lease and works with our broker and state staff on state leases.
    • Creates, reviews and updates emergency preparedness and response plans in the DC office and assists state offices with their plans.

Budgeting and Return to In-person Work 

    • Maintains state registrations. 
    • Establishes and administers department budget.
    • Presents periodic performance reports and metrics to the President/CEO and Management Team. 

Additional Responsibilities as assigned.


Experience, education, and technical proficiency:

  • 12+ years of streamlining and strengthening organization operations.
  • Strong leadership, communications, and organizational skills.
  • Experience with training and managing teams.
  • Experience working and managing multiple “priority” projects simultaneously while meeting established deadlines, working both independently and as part of a team.

SALARY RANGE: $130,000-$140,000; plus, a generous benefits package
