They never have, and never will.<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nOf course,\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0not the only ones who feel this\u00a0way.\u00a0Congressional\u00a0Republican\u00a0leaders\u00a0have been saying the same thing for years.<\/span>\r\n\r\nHere are 5 Congressional Republicans who disagree with President Trump and maintain that states should run elections, not the federal government. <\/span>\r\n\r\n1.\u00a0<\/span>Representative\u00a0Don Bacon, a retiring\u00a0Congressman\u00a0who was\u00a0<\/span><\/b>brave enough to criticize Trump outright<\/span><\/b><\/a>:<\/span><\/b>\u00a0\u201cI opposed nationalizing elections when Speaker Pelosi wanted major changes to elections in all 50 states.\u00a0I\u2019ll\u00a0oppose this now as well. I work w\/the NE Gov & Unicameral to ensure we have secure elections where every citizen\u2019s vote counts. This is what the Constitution calls for.\u201d<\/span>\r\n\r\n2.\u00a0<\/span>Senate\u00a0Majority\u00a0Leader John Thune<\/span><\/a>, in response to Trump: \"I\u2019m not in favor of federalizing elections...That\u2019s a constitutional issue.\"<\/span>\r\n\r\n3.\u00a0<\/span>Senator Tom Cotton, speaking in\u00a02021<\/span><\/b><\/a>:<\/span><\/b> \u201cWe\u00a0shouldn\u2019t\u00a0federalize our elections. We have state legislators and our secretary of state and our attorney general and other state officials to pass our laws here in Arkansas. We have county officials who administer our elections.\u201d<\/span>\r\n\r\n4.<\/span>Senator Mike Crapo, speaking on much-needed voting rights bills in Congress in 2021<\/span><\/a>: \u201cThese bills are really a power grab that would circumvent and federalize our entire elections process, stripping states of their constitutional authorities.\u201d<\/span>\r\n\r\n5.\u00a0<\/span>Senator Shelley\u00a0Moore Capito, on the same legislation<\/span><\/a>: \u201c...states don\u2019t need Washington, D.C., to strip them of their authority and impose burdensome requirements to fix problems that do not exist.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nIt is important to be clear about what these Republicans were opposing at the time. Common Cause has long supported strong federal voting rights protections, including\u00a0the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, which are designed to expand access to the ballot, prevent discrimination, and ensure\u00a0every eligible voter can\u00a0participate\u00a0in our democracy.
