N<\/span>ow he\u2019s<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/08\/17\/us\/politics\/pence-trump-dc-national-guard.html\"> pressuring governors across the country <\/a>to send their armed National Guard troops<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to patrol the streets and enforce this takeover, and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/08\/17\/nx-s1-5505271\/three-republican-led-states-to-send-hundreds-of-national-guard-troops-to-washington\">Republican governors are lining up<\/a> to appease him and support the takeover.\u00a0 <\/span>It\u2019s on all of us to speak out now and stop it.\r\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ignoring Local Leaders and Residents<\/span><\/h2>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And just like when he deployed the National Guard to Los Angeles, he\u2019s doing so over the wishes of residents and their elected leaders \u2013 fearmongering about crime (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/usao-dc\/pr\/violent-crime-dc-hits-30-year-low#\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">though it\u2019s at a 30-year low<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) to justify this latest trampling of D.C.\u2019s right to govern itself.<\/span>\r\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Political Motives Behind the National Guard Deployment<\/span><\/h2>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Trump finds himself in political trouble \u2013 as more and more Americans sour on his cruel agenda of kidnapping our neighbors, cutting our healthcare, and making the rich even richer \u2013 he\u2019ll do absolutely anything to change the headlines.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether we live in D.C. or not, we are going to suffer the consequences. <\/span><b>Deploying the National Guard to take over our cities puts all of our rights at risk<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and brings us one step closer to an authoritarian nightmare none of us want.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/actionnetwork.org\/petitions\/condemn-trumps-attacks-on-washington-dc?redirect=https%3A%2F%2Fsecure.actblue.com%2Fdonate%2Fcommon-cause-trump-accountability-redirect%3Fsource%3D20250811_Trump-Federalizing-DC_SegA-nondonor%26email_referrer%3Demail_2840282%26refcodeEmailReferrer%3Demail_2840282%26amount%3D5%26amounts%3D5%2C10%2C20%2C35%2C50?20250811_Trump-Federalizing-DC_SegA&amp;link_id=1&amp;can_id=bed31c6f23093c8332dcb540847e5c0f&amp;source=email-block-trump-from-keeping-his-1-billion-vanity-plane-4&amp;email_referrer=&amp;email_subject=breaking-trump-federalized-dc-police&amp;&amp;&amp;refcodeEmailReferrer=\"><b>We are not, and will never be, a dictatorship. Condemn Trump\u2019s attacks on Washington D.C. and demand a real voice for the 700,000 Americans who live there<\/b><\/a><b>.<\/b>\r\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Democratic Deficit Facing D.C. Residents<\/span><\/h2>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All of these abuses start with the shameful fact that American democracy simply does not apply to residents of our nation\u2019s capital.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<strong>Taxation Without Representation: The Reality for D.C. <\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite D.C. residents paying more in total federal income tax than those in 22 other states, they<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commoncause.org\/vi\/cong-viec\/fair-representation-for-d-c\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> do not get a voting representative in Congress<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 that\u2019s over 700,000 people without a real say in the federal laws they have to live under like everyone else.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Comparing D.C.\u2019s Lack of Representation to Less Populous States<\/span><\/h2>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wyoming and Vermont, both which are less populous than D.C. and more than 90% white, each get two U.S. Senators and one Representative. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commoncause.org\/vi\/cong-viec\/fair-representation-for-d-c\/\"><b>But D.C. which is 47% Black, doesn\u2019t have a single voting member in either chamber of Congress<\/b><\/a><b>.<\/b>\r\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trump\u2019s Targeting of D.C. in Budget and Policy Decisions<\/span><\/h2>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s why D.C. is such a convenient target for Trump\u2019s \u2013 earlier this summer, he deliberately went after District residents in his budget bill, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/norton.house.gov\/media\/press-releases\/norton-calls-dc-appropriations-bill-text-unreasonable-and-patronizing-700000\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cutting tuition assistance by 50%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and overruling local officials on everything from traffic enforcement to voting rights.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, Trump is trying to single-handedly impose \u201ctough on crime\u201d policies that D.C. voters have repeatedly rejected at the ballot box \u2013 all to draw attention away from his own failed, destructive, and unpopular agenda.<\/span>"}},{"acf_fc_layout":"layout_add_component","_acfe_flexible_toggle":"","component_add_component":null},{"acf_fc_layout":"layout_work","_acfe_flexible_toggle":"","component_work":{"heading":"Work","manually_curate":false,"work":null}},{"acf_fc_layout":"layout_related_articles","_acfe_flexible_toggle":"","component_related_articles":{"heading":"Updates","button_text":"See all Related Articles","manually_curate":false,"articles":null}}]},"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v26.6 (Yoast SEO v27.1.1) - https:\/\/yoast.com\/product\/yoast-seo-premium-wordpress\/ -->\n<title>Trump Federalizes DC Police: How His DC &quot;Takeover&quot; Threatens Us All - Common Cause<\/title>\n<meta name=\"description\" content=\"Trump federalizes D.C. police, overriding local control and threatening democracy for 700,000 residents.
