The President's promise to choose a justice in the mold of the late Antonin Scalia has Democrats gearing up for a fight, particularly after Republican obstruction blocked former President Barack Obama's nominee, appeals court Judge Merrick Garland, for nearly a year.<\/span>&nbsp;<\/p><\/div><div><p lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><br \/><\/span><\/p><p lang=\"EN-US\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2017\/01\/trump-supreme-court-234345\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Politico reports<\/span><\/a><span lang=\"EN-US\">&nbsp;that outside groups are prepared to spend up to $10 million on a public&nbsp;<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">relations campaign&nbsp;<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">to promote Trump's nominee. They apparently will target Democratic senators representing states that Trump carried last fall. Unless Republicans use<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">&nbsp;the \"nuclear option\" to change Senate rules, the<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">&nbsp;nominee will need 60 votes to win confirmation<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">, so the White House needs to round up at least eight Democratic votes.<\/span>&nbsp;<\/p><\/div><div><p lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><br \/><\/span><\/p><p lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Four appeals court judges are said to be the leading candidates for the vacancy. They are Judges William Pryor of the 11<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">th<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">&nbsp;Circuit Court of Appeals, Neil Gorsuch of the 10<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">th<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">&nbsp;Circuit, Diane Sykes of the 7<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">th<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">&nbsp;Circuit, and Thomas&nbsp;<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">Hardiman<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">&nbsp;of the 3<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">th\u1ee9<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">&nbsp;Circuit.<\/span>&nbsp;<\/p><\/div><div><p lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><\/span>&nbsp;<\/p><\/div><div><p lang=\"EN-US\"><strong><span lang=\"EN-US\">The Koch brothers' political network&nbsp;<\/span><\/strong><span lang=\"EN-US\">plans to invest up to $400 million to influence politics and policy this year and during 2018, according to reports emerging from the group's annual winter meeting<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">&nbsp;<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">in Southern California.<\/span>&nbsp;<\/p><\/div><div><p lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><br \/><\/span><\/p><p lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/post-politics\/wp\/2017\/01\/29\/koch-network-condemns-trump-ban-on-refugees-and-immigrants\/?postshare=9791485720737432&amp;tid=ss_tw&amp;utm_term=.59667b13fa01\">T\u1edd Washington Post<\/a> reports that the&nbsp;<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">Kochs<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">&nbsp;and their conservative allies are stressing their independence from President Trump and congressional Republicans, many of whom they helped elect or re-elect last fall.&nbsp;<\/span>&nbsp;<\/p><\/div><div><p lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><br \/><\/span><\/p><p lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\"The network could present a political dilemma for many GOP lawmakers ahead of the 2018 midterm elections as they choose between two influential forces within the party, a populist wing buoyed by Trump&rsquo;s &ldquo;America First&rdquo; call and the well-organized, well-funded Koch-aligned activists who embrace open trade,\" the Post's&nbsp;<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">Matea<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">&nbsp;Gold and James&nbsp;<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">Hohmann<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">&nbsp;write.<\/span>&nbsp;<\/p><\/div><div><p lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><br \/><\/span><\/p><p lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">A senior aide to the&nbsp;<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">Kochs<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">&nbsp;on Sunday released a statement critical of President Trump's executive order blocking immigration from seven mostly Muslim nations.<\/span>&nbsp;<\/p><\/div><div><p lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><br \/><\/span><\/p><p lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">&ldquo;We believe it is possible to keep Americans safe without excluding people who wish to come here to contribute and pursue a better life for their families,&rdquo; said Brian Hooks,&nbsp;the president of the Charles Koch Foundation.&nbsp;<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">&ldquo;The travel ban is the wrong approach and will likely be counterproductive.&nbsp;<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">Our country has benefited tremendously from a history of welcoming people from all cultures and backgrounds. This is a hallmark of free and open societies.&rdquo;<\/span>&nbsp;<\/p><\/div><div><p lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><\/span>&nbsp;<\/p><\/div><div><p lang=\"EN-US\"><strong><span lang=\"EN-US\">The President's immigration order&nbsp;<\/span><\/strong><span lang=\"EN-US\">sparked protests in cities across the country in what&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2017\/01\/29\/homeland-security-judges-stay-has-little-impact-travel-ban\/97211720\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Hoa K\u1ef3 Ng\u00e0y Nay<\/span><\/a><span lang=\"EN-US\">&nbsp;called \"<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">part of a groundswell of fury that erupted at&nbsp;airports across the nation Saturday&nbsp;and showed no signs of abating.\"<\/span>&nbsp;<\/p><\/div><div><p lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><br \/><\/span><\/p><p lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\"There is such an energy and anger that I have to do something about it,\"&nbsp;<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">Jan&nbsp;<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">Rudzinski<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">, of Arden, Del., told the newspaper<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">&nbsp;as she joined&nbsp;a rally in Philadelphia where signs said \"Welcome Muslims\" and \"Let them in.\"<\/span>&nbsp;<\/p><\/div><div><p lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><br \/><\/span><\/p><p lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">The order sent civil liberties-minded attorneys and some Democratic members of Congress running to major airports to offer legal aid and political support to travelers suddenly blocked from entering the U.S..
