There is no federal law making collusion a crime.\r\n\r\nWhile \u201ccollusion\u201d has proven to be a useful word for journalists and the general public, it also serves as a useful straw man for defenders of President Trump; they argue that collusion is not a crime and that the Trump campaign\u2019s activities did not constitute collusion, so there\u2019s no reason for further investigation.\r\n\r\nHowever, the fact that there\u2019s no law prohibiting \u201ccollusion\u201d doesn\u2019t mean there\u2019s no statute prohibiting some of the specific activities that the Trump campaign engaged in, or may have engaged in.\r\n\r\nFor example, federal law bars vi\u1ec7c k\u00eau g\u1ecdi ho\u1eb7c nh\u1eadn \u0111\u01b0\u1ee3c s\u1ef1 \u0111\u00f3ng g\u00f3p t\u1eeb m\u1ed9t c\u00f4ng d\u00e2n n\u01b0\u1edbc ngo\u00e0i<\/a>. Tu\u1ea7n tr\u01b0\u1edbc, Khi\u1ebfu n\u1ea1i chung \u0111\u00e3 n\u1ed9p<\/a>s with the Federal Election Commission and Department of Justice alleging that the Trump campaign violated this prohibition when Donald Trump Jr. asked for a meeting with a Russian to receive what he believed would be valuable opposition research on Hillary Clinton.\r\n\r\nFederal law also prohibits candidates from cooperating or consulting with a foreign national who is spending money to influence a U.S. election. These \u201ccoordinated expenditures\u201d are treated as contributions under campaign finance law and thus run afoul of the law\u2019s ban on contributions from foreign nationals in U.S. elections.\r\n\r\nFinally, federal law prohibits hai ho\u1eb7c nhi\u1ec1u ng\u01b0\u1eddi \u00e2m m\u01b0u ph\u1ea1m t\u1ed9i<\/a>\u2014an offense known as \u201ccriminal conspiracy.\u201d\r\n\r\nAs evidence of Trump campaign interactions with Russian nationals connected to Putin\u2019s government continues to mount, investigation by the Department of Justice, the Federal Election Commission and Congressional Committees is necessary. And though \u201ccollusion\u201d is a convenient word for describing these potential violations, our justice system rightly demands precision when it comes to defining violations of the law.
