The Truth Matters: Why Meta Must Reverse Its Reckless Decision to Abandon Fact-Checking

Meta's decision to abandon fact-checking on Facebook and Instagram endangers truthful dialogue and paves the way for unchecked election disinformation.

Platforms like Facebook and Instagram have an obligation to their users to fact-check content – to protect the truth, create space for meaningful dialogue, and encourage honest conversations.

Meta must stand up against disinformation on their platforms and reverse their reckless decision to abandon fact-checking.

Mark Zuckerberg is dismantling Facebook and Instagram’s fact-checking program – and instead copying the failed “community notes” approach that helped turn Elon Musk’s X into a hotbed of election disinformation.

By shutting down efforts to counter disinformation, Zuckerberg is paving the way for dangerous election lies to spread unchecked on Facebook and Instagram.

He’s blatantly pandering to Trump – this decision comes after an in-person meeting with the incoming president, a $1 million donation to his inauguration committee, and a conservative overhaul of the company’s government relations department.

This dangerous shift mirrors the chaos of Elon Musk’s X, where false or misleading election posts racked up over 2 billion views last year.

Content moderation exists to protect the truth, create space for meaningful dialogue, and encourage honest conversations.

That’s why Meta and other social media companies chose to start moderating content in the first place. We need to take election disinformation seriously – and platforms like Facebook and Instagram have an obligation to their users to moderate their content.
