Mere hours after the tragic killing of an American citizen at the hands of ICE officers in Minneapolis, Attorney General Pam Bondi sent Minnesota Gov. Walz a letter with a clear message: hand over Minnesotans’ private data, and we’ll remove ICE from your state.  

It was a cruel ploy to coerce Minnesota state officials into giving the Trump Administration something they desperately want, your voter data.  

That’s because sending ICE into our communities was never about public safety. It was about intimidation and control, and it used the American people as sacrificial pawns.  

President Trump knows his agenda is incredibly unpopular. He knows that if the midterms are free and fair, Americans will hold him accountable and he’ll lose his stranglehold of power over Congress and the executive branch.  

He’s doing everything he can now to undermine our election systems and pick who can and can’t vote. Once again, he’s putting his own power before the American people. 

That’s why Gov. Walz and Secretary of State Simon must stand firm and refuse to hand over your data to the Trump Administration. 

Gov. Walz and Secretary of State Simon both have a duty to keep their constituents, and their personal data, safe.  

We know the DOJ could use this highly sensitive data to further target innocent Minnesotans, putting them in even more danger.  

What’s Next?  

While the Trump Administration is currently using ICE to coerce Minnesota into handing over its voter data, it could easily be anyone’s state tomorrow. 

The DOJ has demanded sensitive voter roll data in 44 states, blue and red states alike. They’ve sued 24 of these states, and Washington D.C., for refusing to hand over their citizens’ voter rolls.  

In 14 of those states, Common Cause is challenging the Trump Administration’s unprecedented demands for voter rolls in court, including in Minnesota, to protect your privacy and freedom to vote. And we’re not done yet.
