{"id":53320,"date":"2026-01-07T11:35:58","date_gmt":"2026-01-07T16:35:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.commoncause.org\/?post_type=article&p=53320"},"modified":"2026-01-07T11:35:58","modified_gmt":"2026-01-07T16:35:58","slug":"callais-decision-isnt-an-excuse-to-eliminate-black-districts-in-the-south","status":"publish","type":"article","link":"https:\/\/www.commoncause.org\/tl\/articles\/callais-decision-isnt-an-excuse-to-eliminate-black-districts-in-the-south\/","title":{"rendered":"Callais Decision Isn\u2019t an Excuse to Eliminate Black Districts in the South"},"template":"","class_list":["post-53320","article","type-article","status-publish","hentry","article_type-blog-post"],"acf":{"details":{"summary":"Looking at you, Florida, Alabama, and South Carolina.","featured_image":"","article_type":1103,"authors":["{\"site_id\":\"1\",\"post_type\":\"person\",\"post_id\":7755}"],"related_issues":[103,2066],"related_work":false,"location":null},"sidebar":{"helper_enable_sidebar":false,"helper_media_contact":{"heading":"Media Contact","manually_enter_person":false,"person":["{\"site_id\":\"1\",\"post_type\":\"person\",\"post_id\":7755}"],"name":"","role":"","phone":"","email":""},"helper_links_downloads":{"heading":"Links & Downloads","links":null}},"page_layout":[{"acf_fc_layout":"layout_wysiwyg","_acfe_flexible_toggle":null,"component_wysiwyg":{"content":"It seems like\u00a0every\u00a0few years a new case is at the U.S. Supreme Court dealing with a congressional district map from Louisiana.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nThis year is no different, as the\u00a0<\/span>Louisiana vs Callais\u00a0<\/span><\/i>case awaits a decision that many court observers think will significantly change protections the Voting Rights Act gives for minority representation in congressional districts.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nWhether the court once again weakens democracy through a bad redistricting case ruling or not, one thing is clear\u00a0<\/span>\u2014<\/span>\u00a0this\u00a0one\u00a0decision\u00a0isn\u2019t\u00a0an\u00a0excuse to dismantle congressional districts built to support Black representation all over the South.<\/span>\r\n\r\nLooking at you, Florida, Alabama, and South Carolina.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nHere\u2019s why it\u00a0doesn\u2019t\u00a0make sense to rip open the maps before the next census:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n1. Mid-decade redistricting is already a failure for President Trump.<\/span><\/b>\r\n\r\nAnd changing more maps\u00a0won\u2019t\u00a0save it or Republican control of Congress.\u00a0<\/span>Breaking this norm to win a few seats has kicked off a national redistricting war that Trump isn\u2019t winning<\/span><\/a>. Changing more seats due to a Supreme Court case will just encourage more states to balance the scales. For the handful of seats that may flip for states who disregard VRA protections, it will embolden other states on the sidelines to join the fight. The partisan difference will be minimal, but the damage to democratic norms will be massive. There\u2019s no reason for other states to open their maps up now.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n2. <\/span>Regardless of the political bend of a current Supreme Court, Black representation in Congress matters.\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nPresident Trump is\u00a0<\/span>already targeting Black representation in mid-decade redistricting.<\/span><\/a>\u00a0\u00a0According to the data,\u00a0<\/span>Black representation in Congress didn\u2019t match the percentage of Americans who identified as Black until 2023.<\/span><\/a>\u00a0That\u00a0data is heavily influenced by House members who are Black, so reducing that number through\u00a0eliminating\u00a0VRA-protected districts will\u00a0send us backward on this issue.<\/span>\r\n\r\nThe VRA has been the vehicle that has slowly increased Black representation in Congress.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0important to have people who have the same shared experiences as those they represent in Congress.
