{"id":46134,"date":"2025-08-21T13:06:53","date_gmt":"2025-08-21T17:06:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.commoncause.org\/?post_type=article&#038;p=46134"},"modified":"2025-08-22T13:10:25","modified_gmt":"2025-08-22T17:10:25","slug":"your-vote-your-voice-why-the-fight-in-texas-matters-for-us-all","status":"publish","type":"article","link":"https:\/\/www.commoncause.org\/tl\/articles\/your-vote-your-voice-why-the-fight-in-texas-matters-for-us-all\/","title":{"rendered":"Your Vote, Your Voice: Why the Fight in Texas Matters for Us All"},"template":"","class_list":["post-46134","article","type-article","status-publish","hentry"],"acf":{"details":{"summary":"Common Cause is fighting Trump\u2019s mid-decade redistricting schemes to protect fair maps and a free 2026 election.","featured_image":"","article_type":false,"authors":"","related_issues":[2066],"related_work":[2095],"location":null},"sidebar":{"helper_enable_sidebar":false,"helper_media_contact":{"heading":"Media Contact","manually_enter_person":false,"person":"","name":"","role":"","phone":"","email":""},"helper_links_downloads":{"heading":"Links & Downloads","links":null}},"page_layout":[{"acf_fc_layout":"layout_wysiwyg","_acfe_flexible_toggle":"","component_wysiwyg":{"content":"Common Cause is working to protect a free and fair 2026 election \u2014 pushing back against Trump\u2019s authoritarian power grabs and confronting mid-decade redistricting efforts in Texas, California, and beyond.\r\n\r\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">Ever since President Trump set off this race to the bottom by ordering Texas Republicans to add 5 GOP districts to the state's <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">already-unfair <\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">voting maps, our team has been working around the clock to defend the people's voice.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<img class=\"alignnone wp-image-46135 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.commoncause.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Untitled-design-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" \/>\r\n\r\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">Last week, our redistricting experts released <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commoncause.org\/tl\/mapagkukunan-2\/policy-statement-on-mid-decade-redistricting-response\/\">a rigorous set of fairness criteria<\/a> for any new mid-decade redistricting plan<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">so we could focus on the most urgent threats to fair representation \u2013 and at least in California,<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> state leaders listened to Common Cause<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">So today, we're announcing that under the first use of our new criteria: <\/span>California's plan passes, and Texas\u2019s fails.\r\n\r\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">That means we\u2019re spending our limited time and resources on the fight in Texas. Lawmakers who bravely left the state to deny the Texas GOP a quorum have returned \u2013<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/nicole-collier-locked-in-capitol\">forced to accept a law enforcement escort<\/a> or be trapped in the Capitol building, despite violating no laws.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Common Cause Texas is rallying to speak out.<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> We\u2019re holding \"Stop the Trump Takeover\" events and making sure there's a constant crowd outside the Capitol building and inside the gallery \u2013 to stop these politicians from ripping away our rights under cover of darkness.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">Unfortunately, Texas political insiders now believe the GOP will be able to ram through this new map by the end of the week.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">That means California will move its maps forward \u2013 and <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">because California Democrats listened to Common Cause<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and complied with all of our fairness criteria, we will not oppose their efforts.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">Remember \u2013 we\u2019re going all in on this fight because President Trump and his MAGA base <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">realize that if they have to defend their cruel and destructive agenda in a free and fair 2026 election, they\u2019re doomed.<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">But instead of trying to convince voters, or changing their unpopular policies, they\u2019re trying to throw out democracy itself.
