{"id":45717,"date":"2025-08-12T17:29:48","date_gmt":"2025-08-12T21:29:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.commoncause.org\/?post_type=article&#038;p=45717"},"modified":"2025-08-20T12:10:35","modified_gmt":"2025-08-20T16:10:35","slug":"our-response-to-mid-decade-redistricting","status":"publish","type":"article","link":"https:\/\/www.commoncause.org\/tl\/articles\/our-response-to-mid-decade-redistricting\/","title":{"rendered":"Our Response to Mid-Decade Redistricting"},"template":"","class_list":["post-45717","article","type-article","status-publish","hentry","article_type-blog-post"],"acf":{"details":{"summary":"","featured_image":"","article_type":1103,"authors":"","related_issues":false,"related_work":[2095],"location":null},"sidebar":{"helper_enable_sidebar":false,"helper_media_contact":{"heading":"Media Contact","manually_enter_person":false,"person":"","name":"","role":"","phone":"","email":""},"helper_links_downloads":{"heading":"Links & Downloads","links":null}},"page_layout":[{"acf_fc_layout":"layout_wysiwyg","_acfe_flexible_toggle":"","component_wysiwyg":{"content":"<span data-contrast=\"auto\">Common Cause will not <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commoncause.org\/tl\/pindutin\/common-cause-launches-fairness-criteria-to-counter-mid-decade-power-plays\/\">pre-emptively oppose mid-decade redistricting<\/a> in California. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">President Trump and Republican leaders in states like Texas are doing all they can to <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">prevent the people from having a say in our future<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> \u2013 enabling them to concentrate power as they cut our healthcare, kidnap our neighbors, and occupy our cities.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">We must focus our limited resources on that larger threat. We won\u2019t call for unilateral political disarmament in the face of authoritarianism \u2013 or let our country\u2019s balance of power be <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">decided not by the voters, but by the will of one political party.<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">That doesn\u2019t require changing our core principles. Independent redistricting commissions are one way \u2013 and by far the best way \u2013 to draw fair maps and achieve fair representation for every single American.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">As the past few weeks have demonstrated, when we let politicians draw maps, they\u2019re going to abuse that power to hide from their voters, keep themselves in power, and deprive people of their voice in government.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">That\u2019s why we fought gerrymandering before the Supreme Court in <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Common Cause v. Rucho,<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and why ever since Trump directed his party\u2019s governors to draw additional GOP districts for 2026, Common Cause Texas has gone all out to stop that vile power grab.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">We oppose gerrymandering on principle \u2013 no matter who is doing it. We\u2019ll evaluate any new maps proposed \u2013 in red, blue, and purple states \u2013 by our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commoncause.org\/tl\/mapagkukunan-2\/policy-statement-on-mid-decade-redistricting-response\/\">fairness criteria<\/a> so we can respond to the most urgent threats to fair representation and put people, not parties, first.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">In 2021, every member of Congress \u2013 including many of the California Republicans who will likely be drawn out of their seats \u2013 had a chance to <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">solve this problem for good in all 50 states<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, but rejected it when they rejected the Freedom to Vote Act.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">That bill would have created one national set of fair redistricting standards \u2013 and passing it is still the only permanent solution to the mess these politicians have created.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">Two wrongs don\u2019t make a right \u2013 and the Texas GOP\u2019s decision to set off a nationwide race to the bottom on redistricting is going to leave voters in every state that tries it worse off \u2013 blue, red, or purple.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">Common Cause will continue working for fair representation, fair maps, and people-centered democratic processes in every state \u2013 and with your help, we will hold <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">kahit sino<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> who would deny us our voices accountable.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span>"}},{"acf_fc_layout":"layout_add_component","_acfe_flexible_toggle":"","component_add_component":null},{"acf_fc_layout":"layout_work","_acfe_flexible_toggle":"","component_work":{"heading":"Work","manually_curate":false,"work":null}},{"acf_fc_layout":"layout_related_articles","_acfe_flexible_toggle":"","component_related_articles":{"heading":"Updates","button_text":"See all Related Articles","manually_curate":false,"articles":null}}]},"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v26.6 (Yoast SEO v27.1.1) -
