Laws<\/span><\/h3>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Right after the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shelby<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> decision in 2013, North Carolina <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2013\/07\/26\/politics\/north-carolina-voter-id\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">passed a law<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> requiring voters to show an I.D. at the polls. This part of the law was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2020\/02\/18\/politics\/north-carolina-voter-id-law\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">struck down<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by a federal appeals court in 2016 for <\/span><b>\u201c<\/b><b>target[ing] African-Americans with almost surgical precision.\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But North Carolina lawmakers kept pushing for voter I.D. rules. In 2018, voters approved a state constitutional amendment requiring photo I.D. to vote. Governor Roy Cooper vetoed the legislature\u2019s bill implementing the amendment, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2019\/12\/27\/politics\/north-carolina-voter-id-law\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">saying<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that it once again targeted \u201cminority, poor and elderly voters.\u201d Republicans in the legislature overrode his veto, but this law was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2020\/02\/18\/politics\/north-carolina-voter-id-law\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blocked<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by a federal appeals court two years later in 2020.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, in 2023, the state Supreme Court allowed the voter I.D. rules to move forward. The 2024 election was the first time the law was used.
