{"id":13084,"date":"2017-01-19T18:34:00","date_gmt":"2017-01-19T18:34:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.commoncause.org\/articles\/ethics-questions-still-dogging-trump-nominees\/"},"modified":"2017-01-19T18:34:00","modified_gmt":"2017-01-19T18:34:00","slug":"ethics-questions-still-dogging-trump-nominees","status":"publish","type":"article","link":"https:\/\/www.commoncause.org\/tl\/articles\/ethics-questions-still-dogging-trump-nominees\/","title":{"rendered":"Ethics Questions Still Dogging Trump Nominees"},"template":"","class_list":["post-13084","article","type-article","status-publish","hentry","article_type-blog-post"],"acf":{"details":{"summary":"There are more ethical questions about President-elect Trump's Cabinet nominees","featured_image":null,"article_type":1103,"authors":["{\"site_id\":\"1\",\"post_type\":\"person\",\"post_id\":8577}"],"related_issues":[149,2082],"related_work":false,"location":null},"sidebar":{"helper_enable_sidebar":false,"helper_media_contact":{"heading":"Media Contact","manually_enter_person":false,"person":null,"name":"","role":"","phone":"","email":""},"helper_links_downloads":{"heading":"Links & Downloads","links":null}},"page_layout":[{"acf_fc_layout":"layout_wysiwyg","_acfe_flexible_toggle":null,"component_wysiwyg":{"content":"<div><p lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">On the last full day of the Obama presidency, Donald Trump's Cabinet nominees are continuing to find some rough going on Capitol Hill.<\/span>&nbsp;<\/p><p lang=\"EN-US\"><\/p><\/div><div><p lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">And as usual, questions about the nominees' ethics are front and center.<\/span>&nbsp;<\/p><p lang=\"EN-US\"><\/p><\/div><div><p lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">As the Senate Finance Committee opened its hearing on&nbsp;<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">Steven&nbsp;<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">Mnuchin<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">, the Treasury Secretary-designate,&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/wonk\/wp\/2017\/01\/19\/treasury-nominee-initially-omitted-more-than-100-million-from-disclosures-democratic-memo-shows\/?utm_term=.4f6f393dfa61\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Ang Washington Post<\/span><\/a><span lang=\"EN-US\">&nbsp;reported that his initial financial disclosure report omitted more than $100 million in personal assets, plus his interest in a Cayman Islands corporation.&nbsp;<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">Mnuchin<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">&nbsp;has since filed an amended report.<\/span>&nbsp;<\/p><\/div><div><p lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><br \/><\/span><\/p><p lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">The Treasury nominee also i<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">s being grilled about allegations that a bank he owned took unfair advantage of vulnerable homeowners when the housing market crashed in 2007-08.<\/span>&nbsp;<\/p><p lang=\"EN-US\"><\/p><\/div><div><p lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Mnuchin<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">&nbsp;is a former Goldman Sachs executive and hedge fund manager who has helped finance several Hollywood films.&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/wonk\/wp\/2017\/01\/19\/treasury-nominee-initially-omitted-more-than-100-million-from-disclosures-democratic-memo-shows\/?utm_term=.4f6f393dfa61\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">The Huffington Post<\/span><\/a><span lang=\"EN-US\">&nbsp;<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">mga ulat<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">&nbsp;<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">&nbsp;<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">that in&nbsp;<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">early&nbsp;<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">questioni<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">ng<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">, Sen. Ron Wyden, the senior Democrat on the Senate Finance&nbsp;<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">Committee, attacked&nbsp;<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">Mnuchin's<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">&nbsp;use of Caribbean tax havens to shelter hedge fund profits.<\/span>&nbsp;<\/p><p lang=\"EN-US\"><\/p><\/div><div><p lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Over in the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, Energy Secretary nominee Rick Perry opened his confirmation hearing by retracting and apologizing for his 1912 call for the Energy Department's abolition.<\/span>&nbsp;<\/p><p lang=\"EN-US\"><\/p><\/div><div><p lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\"My past statements made over five years ago about abolishing the Department of Energy do not reflect my current thinking,\" Perry said. \"In fact, after being briefed on so many of the vital functions of the Department of Energy, I regret recommending its elimination.\"<\/span>&nbsp;<\/p><p lang=\"EN-US\"><\/p><\/div><div><p lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">The then-Texas governor's presidential campaign imploded when he called for shutting down three Cabinet departments but during a debate could only recall th<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">e<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">&nbsp;names of&nbsp;<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">two of them. Energy was the missing link. Perry's embarrassed \"oops<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">\" at his memory lapse made him a national laughingstock.<\/span>&nbsp;<\/p><p lang=\"EN-US\"><\/p><\/div><div><p lang=\"EN-US\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2017\/01\/18\/politics\/trump-cabinet-confirmation-hearings-live\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">CNN is live blogging on the hearings here<\/span><\/a><span lang=\"EN-US\">.<\/span>&nbsp;<\/p><p lang=\"EN-US\"><\/p><\/div><div><p lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">On Wednesday, three Trump nominees came under questioning on ethics issues.&nbsp;<\/span>&nbsp;<\/p><\/div><ul><li data-listid=\"1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><p lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Rep. Tom Price, R-GA, the Health and Human Services Secretary-designate, is taking fire from Democrats over investments in health care firms that benefited from a bill he was pushing.&nbsp;<\/span>&nbsp;<\/p><\/li><li data-listid=\"1\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><p lang=\"EN-US\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Rep.
