Washington, DC — In response to President Trump announcing his intent to commit war crimes on social media, Common Cause calls on our military to refuse any illegal order and his Cabinet and Vice President Vance to invoke the 25th Amendment immediately and begin succession planning.

The evidence is clear: Donald J. Trump is unfit to lead, and he no longer possesses the mental faculties required to faithfully execute his duties as President and Commander in Chief of the United States. Should the Cabinet and Vice President refuse to fulfill their duty to our country, Congress should immediately return to town and begin impeachment proceedings to remove President Trump from office.

Threatening genocide if a president’s demands are not met is not normal or American.

Posting profanity-laced rants on social media in place of traditional diplomacy isn’t normal.

Labeling veterans who reaffirm servicemembers should defy illegal orders and uphold the Constitution as ‘traitors’ isn’t normal.

Routinely rebuking basic facts and being unable to speak coherently on a single topic for more than a few minutes isn’t normal.

President Trump’s increasingly erratic behavior is putting our country and American lives in danger. He is putting the world in danger.

This is no longer a policy debate – it is a test of our patriotism and our commitment to our nation, not any political party. Will our elected leaders uphold the Constitution, or will they cower in fear?

Failure to act is not an option. It’s time for the Cabinet to fulfill its moral and constitutional duties to immediately invoke the 25th Amendment. Every minute that our leaders wait is a threat to our country and our democracy.
