{"id":224,"date":"2023-05-19T16:45:40","date_gmt":"2023-05-19T16:45:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.commoncause.org\/texas\/press-releases\/advisory-final-vote-saturday-in-texas-house-on-dangerous-election-bills\/"},"modified":"2023-05-19T16:45:40","modified_gmt":"2023-05-19T16:45:40","slug":"advisory-final-vote-saturday-in-texas-house-on-dangerous-election-bills","status":"publish","type":"press","link":"https:\/\/www.commoncause.org\/texas\/press\/advisory-final-vote-saturday-in-texas-house-on-dangerous-election-bills\/","title":{"rendered":"ADVISORY: Final Vote Saturday in Texas House on Dangerous Election Bills"},"template":"","class_list":["post-224","press","type-press","status-publish","hentry","press_type-press-release"],"acf":{"details":{"summary":"","featured_image":"","press_type":153,"authors":null,"related_issues":[117,406],"related_work":false,"location":52},"sidebar":{"helper_enable_sidebar":false,"helper_media_contact":{"heading":"Media Contact","manually_enter_person":false,"person":null,"name":"","role":"","phone":"","email":""},"helper_links_downloads":{"heading":"Links & Downloads","links":null}},"page_layout":[{"acf_fc_layout":"layout_wysiwyg","_acfe_flexible_toggle":null,"component_wysiwyg":{"content":"<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AUSTIN\u2014 <\/span><b>Tomorrow, Saturday, May 20, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Texas lawmakers are scheduled to have their final votes on election-related bills that would greenlight state takeovers of local election offices and set Texas on a path to leave ERIC, the Electronic Registration Information Center that many states use to maintain their voter lists.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Saturday session comes during the final stretch of the state\u2019s biennial legislative session, which is slated to end on May 29th.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among the bills schedule for votes are:\u00a0<\/span>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/capitol.texas.gov\/BillLookup\/History.aspx?LegSess=88R&amp;Bill=SB1933\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Senate Bill 1933<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0 a dangerous elections bill that would allow the Texas Secretary of State\u2019s Office to take over the administration of county election departments with little cause.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/capitol.texas.gov\/BillLookup\/History.aspx?LegSess=88R&amp;Bill=SB1070\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Senate Bill 1070<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> , which would let Texas contract with a yet-to-be-identified vendor to check voter registration eligibility and leave ERIC, the Electronic Registration Information Center that has helped election administrators in several states keep up-to-date and accurate voter registration lists.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/capitol.texas.gov\/BillLookup\/History.aspx?LegSess=88R&amp;Bill=SB1750\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Senate Bill 1750,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a bill seeking to abolish the Harris County Election Administrator\u2019s Office, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">making Harris County, home to Houston,\u00a0 the only large metropolitan county in Texas to not have elections run by a professional administrator instead of a partisan elected official.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, Common Cause Texas will participate in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mobilize.us\/commoncause\/event\/561554\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We Know Our Worth: Rally for Our Rights<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> beginning at 2 p.m. CT on the south steps of the Texas Capitol. The rally, rescheduled from last week, is hosted by the Texas for All and will protest the slate of anti-democratic and anti-freedom bills being passed this legislative session.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The following is a statement from <\/span><b>Katya Ehresman, Common Cause Texas\u2019 voting rights program manager.<\/b>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEvery Texan should be alarmed at the brazen attacks we are seeing by Texas lawmakers on the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">independence and self-governance of our local communities.\u00a0 These undemocratic power grabs\u00a0 aren\u2019t about protecting the right to vote or ensuring our elections are safe but are about suppressing the rights of voters who may want a different future.
