","featured_image":"","press_type":153,"authors":[null],"related_issues":[100,408],"related_work":false,"location":52},"sidebar":{"helper_enable_sidebar":false,"helper_media_contact":{"heading":"Media Contact","manually_enter_person":false,"person":null,"name":"","role":"","phone":"","email":""},"helper_links_downloads":{"heading":"Links & Downloads","links":null}},"page_layout":[{"acf_fc_layout":"layout_wysiwyg","_acfe_flexible_toggle":null,"component_wysiwyg":{"content":"<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A group of Texas legislators held a press conference Tuesday to discuss the critical need for campaign finance and transparency reforms in the wake of a recently aired CNN special \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/app.frame.io\/presentations\/5beb3332-982d-4e87-8831-f33f2d30938c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deep in the Pockets of Texa<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s\u201d which focused on the outsized influence\u00a0 a small number of wealthy conservatives have in Texas.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Republican state Sen. Kel Seliger said in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/07\/24\/politics\/texas-far-right-politics-invs\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">documentary<\/a>, \u201cIt is Russian-style oligarchy, pure and simple. Really really wealthy people who are willing to spend a lot of money to get the policy they want and they get it.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here in Texas, campaign finance reforms are long overdue to return power in this state to the people.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The reforms being sought include:\u00a0<\/span>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">limits on campaign contributions<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">modernizing the Texas Election Commission<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">having\u00a0 elected officials\u2019 Personal Financial Statements available to the public online on a state website<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allowing local candidates to file campaign finance reports online<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">advocating for federal action to curtail the influence of dark money elections.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n&nbsp;\r\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>Statement from Common Cause Texas Executive Director Anthony Gutierrez<\/b><\/p>\r\n&nbsp;\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common Cause exists to ensure we have a democracy that works for everyone, not just the privileged few. And that\u2019s why we strongly support the reforms announced today by Representative Zweiner and others.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Texas is one of just a handful of states that places no limits on the amount of money an individual can give to a candidate running for state office. This allows wealthy Texans to have far too much influence with legislators of both parties, while Texans of lesser means face obstacles in having their voices heard. Thankfully, there are policymakers from both parties speaking out on the long overdue need for change.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Public policy may be bending in the direction of wealth, but only as long as we let it. Limiting how much one wealthy individual can give a candidate would be a huge step towards a better, more representative democracy for the Lone Star State.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To put this problem into context for Texans who might wonder why they should care whether or not we have contribution limits - Last year, our energy grid failed and Texans across the state were freezing in their homes.
