In that case, over 100,000 naturalized\u00a0citizen\u00a0were at risk of being removed from the\u00a0voter rolls\u00a0until a\u00a0court\u00a0stepped in to intervene.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nOne of the core problems with the Whitley voter purge was a reliance on Department of Public Safety data that was shown to be\u00a0highly unreliable. This appears to\u00a0be\u00a0the same data being used in this voter purge.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\r\n

Statement of Anthony Gutierrez, Common Cause Texas Executive Director<\/h3>\r\nThe\u00a0Texas Secretary of State\u00a0deputizing\u00a0himself\u00a0as\u00a0an\u00a0immigration official\u00a0should\u00a0alarm every voter.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nLet\u2019s be clear:\u00a0our Secretary of State\u00a0is\u00a0not\u2014and should not\u2014be in charge of\u00a0immigration enforcement.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nThe Secretary of State\u2019s office\u00a0should be squarely focused on providing free,\u00a0fair, and safe\u00a0elections\u00a0for\u00a0every voter.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nThough we\u00a0are still seeking answers to many questions about this latest voter purge,\u00a0we\u00a0do\u00a0know why this policy was put in place.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0just one more\u00a0shameful\u00a0attempt\u00a0by partisan actors\u00a0to\u00a0do whatever they can to suppress Brown Texans from exercising their freedom to vote.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nFor months, state leaders have advanced policies\u00a0that\u00a0target Black, Brown, and Asian Texans\u00a0to\u00a0intentionally\u00a0shut them out of our democratic process.\u00a0From making it harder to cast a ballot to\u00a0rigging our elections for the next decade\u00a0with gerrymandered maps,\u00a0Governor Greg Abbott and his cronies will\u00a0stop at nothing\u00a0to win another\u00a0election.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nTime and again they have proven that their political ambitions matter more than our freedom to vote and have a say in the issues that impact us, our families, and our communities.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nUntil this policy can be explained in detail to the public, we are calling on the Secretary of State to pause this process immediately.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>"}}]},"yoast_head":"\nTexas Secretary of State Demands Voters of Color Provide Proof of Citizenship -
