The bill also authorizes political party chairs to demand reviews of future elections, and elevate those reviews to the Secretary of State for further review, with counties paying the entire cost of the processes.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The hearing livestream will be available <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/senate.texas.gov\/av-live.php\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The bill was first<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/capitol.texas.gov\/BillLookup\/History.aspx?LegSess=873&amp;Bill=SB47\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">filed on Friday<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and added to the Committee\u2019s agenda late Friday afternoon, just after a staffer for former President Donald Trump<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/realLizUSA\/status\/1444022291860439053\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">released a statement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> urging that the bill be passed.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Trump has personally interfered in other states\u2019 legislative processes, to open partisan reviews of the 2020 election.<\/span>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><b>Wisconsin<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> General Assembly Speaker Robin Vos resisted calls for a partisan election review for months, but after traveling with Trump<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SpeakerVos\/status\/1429824553124089859\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">in a private plane<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Vos announced one and<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journaltimes.com\/news\/local\/vos-meets-with-trump-vows-to-keep-ex-president-updated-on-election-investigation\/article_48995564-186c-5865-bd0b-04ba1b41a484.html\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">said he would<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> keep Trump \u201cupdated on our investigation.\u201d\u00a0 That partisan review will cost Wisconsin taxpayers <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wpr.org\/republican-lawmakers-approve-former-conservative-justice-head-2020-election-investigation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">at least $680,000<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><b>Pennsylvania<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Senate President Pro Tempore Jake Corman likewise resisted calls for an \u201cArizona-style\u201d partisan election review for months. Then Corman had<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/timelywriter\/status\/1429941214795739143\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">a conversation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> with Trump, and announced \u201cI think he\u2019s comfortable with where we\u2019re heading.\u201d The state senator appointed to head the review also spoke with Trump, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pennlive.com\/news\/2021\/08\/pa-sen-cris-dush-talks-about-election-review-his-doubts-of-the-vote-count-and-how-donald-trump-is-watching.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">then announced<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Trump was \u201cgoing to be watching me.\u201d The committee running the review has since subpoenaed personal information of all voters in the state \u2013 information that would be \u2018<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commoncause.org\/media\/arizona-partisan-election-review-findings-presented-at-no-questions-asked-hearing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">a gold mine\u2019 for identity thieves<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u2013 without any explanation about what they plan to do with it or how they plan to protect the information from disclosure.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A recent<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commoncause.org\/media\/arizona-partisan-election-review-findings-presented-at-no-questions-asked-hearing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">partisan review in Arizona<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> cost taxpayers millions of dollars \u2013 and then concluded that Biden won the state.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If the Republican-led Texas Legislature begins a partisan review of the 2020 elections, it would be the first such review in a state that Trump won. The bill Trump has focused on was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commoncause.org\/texas\/press-release\/texas-senate-passes-bill-encouraging-partisan-election-challenges\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">previously passed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> by the Texas Senate, after a rushed process; but expired at the end of the second special legislative session.<\/span>\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center\"><b><i>Statement by Common Cause Texas Associate Director Stephanie G\u00f3mez<\/i><\/b><\/h3>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This is getting a bit embarrassing. On Friday, leaders of this great state of Texas dropped everything to respond to a tweet \u2013 a tweet from someone who isn\u2019t even a Texas resident, but rather a staffer for a former president who lives in Florida.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">And they\u2019re so willing to accommodate, they\u2019re willing to cast doubt on the very elections <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">that they won<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u2013 and they\u2019re willing to saddle county taxpayers with unknown and unlimited costs not just this year but forever into the future.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Is there a purpose to all this? Trump won the state of Texas. Why are he and his followers so eager to create doubt about our elections?<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Texans deserve better than to have our ballots treated like fuel for an election conspiracy.
