The Texas House of Representatives passed Senate Bill 1599 Wednesday afternoon, which will make necessary modernization updates to the mail-in ballot process and election systems, improve the online ballot tracker, and enable more Texans to correct defects on mail-in ballots.

Republican supermajorities in the country’s second-most populous state consider ways to criminalize voting and create paths to overturn election results.

Texas lawmakers will hear House Bill 1243, a dangerous elections bill that would increase the criminal penalty of voting violations from a misdemeanor to a second-degree felony, which can carry a punishment of two to 20 years in state prison.
