Donald Trump, Kristi Noem and the Department of Homeland Security have torn families apart, violated our civil rights, and <strong>killed our neighbors<\/strong>: at the time of writing, Renee Nicole Good, Alex Pretti, and six others <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2026\/jan\/28\/deaths-ice-2026-\">have died in ICE\u2019s custody or at the hands of ICE agents in 2026 alone.<\/a>\r\n\r\nThis is not collateral damage. It is <strong>exactly<\/strong> what this administration wants to happen. They take pride in their cruelty, encourage these attacks on our civil rights, and welcome any distraction that takes attention away from the many ways they are failing to serve the American people.\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?sa=t&amp;source=web&amp;rct=j&amp;opi=89978449&amp;url=https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/trump-administration\/trump-says-kristi-noem-stepping-homeland-security-secretary-rcna248719\"><strong>Kristi Noem is officially out as DHS Secretary<\/strong><\/a>, but there's more work to be done to hold the agency accountable.\r\n<h3>Our Demands<\/h3>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>A moratorium\u00a0on all ICE\u00a0surge\u00a0operations in our communities, not just Minnesota.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>The unconditional\u00a0cooperation\u00a0of\u00a0the federal government\u00a0with\u00a0the local law enforcement agencies who are investigating the\u00a0murders\u00a0of Renee Good and Alex\u00a0Pretti\u00a0and other\u00a0uses\u00a0of force.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>Resignation or presidential firing of top DHS leadership \u2013 after Americans spoke up against former Secretary Kristi Noem, she was fired. We demand continued accountability for other leaders who are responsible for DHS's malpractice.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>A\u00a0comprehensive\u00a0Congressional\u00a0investigation\u00a0into federal immigration\u00a0enforcement\u2019s\u00a0use of force and\u00a0<strong>a NO vote<\/strong>\u00a0on the upcoming DHS funding bill.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\nIn a democracy, masked, armed men don\u2019t roam the streets, harassing people for the color of their skin, attacking and killing peaceful observers, and operating with total impunity.\u00a0To move forward, we must hold DHS and the Trump administration accountable, along with any other leaders who have failed to stand up for our rights.\r\n<h3>We Fired Kristi Noem<\/h3>\r\nUnder Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem\u2019s watch, ICE terrorized neighborhoods across the country. They invaded homes without warrants, targeted civilians of all immigration statuses, and even killed people \u2013 in addition to the tragic killings of Good and Pretti, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/ng-interactive\/2026\/jan\/04\/ice-2025-deaths-timeline\">last year was ICE\u2019s deadliest year in two decades<\/a>.\r\n\r\nAnd every step of the way, <strong>Noem rushed to defend DHS<\/strong> as these abuses come to light. She <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2026\/01\/25\/trump-officials-stick-terrorist-label-on-americans-killed-by-dhs\">falsely labeled peaceful protestors<\/a> as \u201cdomestic terrorists,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/noem-defends-minnesota-ice-operations-says-judges-order-didnt-change-anything\/\">blamed local leaders<\/a> for the violence that ICE has brought to their communities, <a href=\"https:\/\/capitolnewsillinois.com\/news\/dhs-secretary-noem-defends-ice-tactics-in-second-illinois-visit\/\">supported agents\u2019 use of masks<\/a> to hide their identity, and defended numerous recorded incidents of force being unnecessarily used against civilians.\r\n\r\nNoem showed <strong>complete disregard<\/strong> for our laws, our civil rights, and our humanity. So, Americans across the country called for her removal from DHS \u2013and we got it. Firing her as the head of DHS isn\u2019t a one-stop solution, but removing her from power is an important step in preventing more violence, more cover-ups, and more blank checks for abuse.\r\n\r\n<strong>Together, We the People stood up to the Trump administration and FIRED Kristi Noem.\u00a0<\/strong>\r\n<h3>Congress \u2013 Including Congressional Democrats \u2013 Cannot Continue to Fund ICE<\/h3>\r\nCongress has overwhelmingly looked the other way as the Trump administration sends ICE into our cities to execute the president\u2019s cruel agenda, and <strong>too many representatives from both sides of the aisle<\/strong> have chosen to fuel their operations \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/7358105\/dhs-funding-house-vote-ice-immigration-democrats-suozzi-cuellar-davis-gillen-golden-gonzalez-mgp\/\">seven Democrats joined nearly every Republican to hand ICE $10 billion<\/a> to fund their terror campaign.\r\n\r\nWhile Trump\u2019s secret police behave as if they are above the law and his administration tries to convince us our eyes and ears are lying to us, these lawmakers are pretending that more money for body cameras or training will fix an agency that\u2019s making us all less safe <strong>by design<\/strong>.\r\n\r\nPressure from the people, who say <strong>no<\/strong> to sending any more of our tax dollars to Trump\u2019s personal police force while healthcare and food assistance are gutted, has already made a difference: Democratic leadership in the Senate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2026\/jan\/24\/schumer-democrats-dhs-funding-package\">has said it will block any funding package that includes more homeland security funding<\/a>.\r\n\r\nIt is crucial to keep up the pressure and demand that these legislators keep their promise \u2013 now is not the time for cowardice. That\u2019s why Common Cause is mobilizing to defend our communities and holding any representative that doesn\u2019t do the same responsible.\r\n<h3>Trump and His Administration Want to Distract Us, But We See the Big Picture<\/h3>\r\nThe Trump administration <strong>thrives under chaos<\/strong>, all in the hopes that we won\u2019t be able to connect the dots and call out their game.\r\n\r\nBut we see through the fragmentation and the distractions \u2013 <strong>all our fights are connected<\/strong>. We see that sending ICE into our communities to terrorize and brutalize the American people is part of a broader plan to take away our civil rights and hijack our democracy.\r\n\r\nOne of Attorney General Pam Bondi\u2019s <strong>coercive demands<\/strong> to Minnesota leaders in exchange for calling off Trump\u2019s secret police includes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/01\/27\/politics\/pam-bondi-voter-rolls-minnesota-ice\">handing over millions of private voter records<\/a>.\r\n\r\nMinnesota isn\u2019t the only state to receive this demand \u2013 the Department of Justice has demanded that most states hand over their voter files, databases that contain sensitive information and are mandated by law to remain in the hands of state officials. When several states didn\u2019t comply, the DOJ sued them, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commoncause.org\/ru\/%d1%80%d0%b0%d0%b1%d0%be%d1%82%d0%b0\/common-cause-files-lawsuits-nationwide-to-protect-voter-privacy-and-election-integrity\/\">prompting Common Cause to intervene and stand up to these unlawful demands.<\/a>\r\n\r\nWhy does the Trump administration want these voter files? It all comes down to the midterms. This administration is hoping to rig the upcoming elections with anti-voter legislation, gerrymandered maps, and targeted voter purges to ensure that they never have to give up control. And <strong>they\u2019re willing to do whatever it takes<\/strong> \u2013 including sending aggressive, militarized police forces into our cities \u2013 to clear their path.\r\n\r\nThis fight isn\u2019t over because we got rid of Kristi Noem, or former \u201cBorder Patrol Commander-at-Large\u201d Greg Bovino. Leaders throughout the Trump administration, including Pam Bondi and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commoncause.org\/ru\/%d1%81%d1%82%d0%b0%d1%82%d1%8c%d0%b8\/top-5-most-awful-things-you-need-to-know-about-stephen-miller\/\">Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller, <\/a>continue to use DHS as Trump's personal police force.
