Government Watchdog Supports New Bill to Ban Members of Congress from Trading Stock

Majority of Americans support a stock trading ban

Washington, D.C. — Common Cause issued a statement in support of H.R. 6731, newly introduced legislation sponsored by Rep. Seth Magaziner (D-RI) to ban members of Congress from trading stocks, a move long championed by the nonpartisan watchdog.

Polls show 86% of Americans want Congress to prohibit its members from trading stocks, including 88% of Democrats and 87% of Republicans.

This legislation is among several proposals under consideration in Congress to ban member stock trading. As the People’s Lobby, Common Cause uplifts the public’s demands for action and supports any meaningful proposal to stop this clear conflict of interest.

Statement from Common Cause President & CEO Virginia Kase Solomón:

“Every public servant should be focused on serving the people, not playing the stock market. Republicans, Democrats, and independents all agree — it’s common sense that members of Congress shouldn’t be able to buy and sell stock while they’re making laws that could affect those companies and industries. The American public demands action on this issue, and we’ll work with anyone in Congress to get it done.”
