The new format of the data will be made available to all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico and will be key to increasing participation in the ongoing redistricting efforts. On August 12, the Census Bureau released the same demographic information in a\u00a0more raw\u00a0format known as legacy data.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nThe new format includes a software tool that will make it easier to review the demographic data in a matter of minutes. The data released on August 12 in legacy format required users to import the data into a database and take\u00a0additional\u00a0technical steps to easily understand the data. The new format significantly reduces the barriers to\u00a0participating\u00a0in redistricting.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nThe new format will be available at\u00a0<\/span>data.census.gov<\/span><\/a>, the Bureau\u2019s new platform for access to its data and digital content. The platform allows users to search for information by state, county, or place, and see an overview of that area in a geographic profile with visualizations and infographics.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nBy reducing the steps to view the data, more Rhode Islanders can ensure our\u00a0<\/span>state legislators<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>draw fair district maps that\u00a0benefit\u00a0the community.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nAhead of the Reapportionment Commission's first meeting on September 9, Common Cause Rhode Island and a broad coalition\u00a0<\/span>pressed<\/span><\/a>\u00a0the commission\u00a0with a list of demands\u00a0for fairness and transparency.\u00a0To date, state leaders have not responded to their requests and no progress has been made.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nToday, September 16, the Commission will hold a meeting to review the population data from the 2020 Census\u00a0where public testimony will be taken.\u00a0This is the first opportunity to understand how to draw fair maps.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\r\n

Statement of\u00a0John Marion, Common Cause\u00a0Rhode Island Executive Director<\/h3>\r\nRedistricting is the most important voting and elections issue in\u00a0Rhode Island<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>this year. That\u2019s why we need as many\u00a0Rhode Islanders to have a say in this important democratic process as possible. Today\u2019s release of data in an easier-to-use format will help ensure that more of us can equitably participate in this year\u2019s redistricting cycle.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nRedistricting will\u00a0determine\u00a0the voting power of our neighborhoods, towns, and cities for the next ten years.\u00a0That\u2019s\u00a0why\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0so important that we\u00a0the people\u00a0have a say in how our maps are drawn. When\u00a0the people\u00a0are involved, we can be sure that maps are drawn to\u00a0benefit\u00a0us, not the politicians.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nBut for too long, redistricting has been out of reach for many\u00a0Rhode Islanders. Partisan politicians have kept much of the process behind closed doors\u00a0in an attempt to\u00a0silence\u00a0us from speaking up for fair maps.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nOur voices and our people power are the only things standing between partisan politicians and gerrymandered maps that carve up our communities and crush our voting power.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nFrom\u00a0the General Assembly to\u00a0Congress, it\u2019s critical that we hold our elected leaders accountable for drawing fair maps this redistricting cycle. Fair maps will mean we have the power to vote for better schools, a strong economy, and quality healthcare. Fair maps mean we the people can have equal say in the decisions our government makes that impact our communities, regardless of our political affiliation, the color of our skin, or where we live.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nTen years is too long to sit out this redistricting cycle. We are grateful to all those who have already made their voices loud and clear and for fair redistricting. We encourage everyone in\u00a0Rhode Island\u00a0to join us in our call for fair maps today.\u00a0If you care about having a say in your future, your family\u2019s future, or your community\u2019s future, we need you to participate in redistricting.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nA strong and vibrant democracy is a\u00a0participatory\u00a0democracy, one in which we the people have the power to make political decisions.
