Trump’s Threat of Insurrection Act Requires Immediate Removal of ICE

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, President Trump threatened to invoke the Insurrection Act in response to Minneapolis citizens protesting the administration’s assault on their communities.
Statement of Omar Noureldin, Common Cause Senior Vice President of Policy & Litigation
The Trump administration’s manufactured chaos, fear, and violence in Minneapolis as a pretext for using the Insurrection Act is a stark escalation of dangerous federal overreach. This comes on the heels of reckless and life-threatening behavior by ICE agents that has already put Minnesotans at risk and sparked outrage and protest.
Already, ICE has abducted our neighbors, torn children from their parents, attacked peaceful protestors, and, most recently, murdered a mother of three in Minnesota. Invoking the Insurrection Act will allow the Trump administration to bring even more violence to our communities.
This moment demands we use every tool at our disposal, including litigation, legislative oversight, and public outcry to defend constitutional limits on military force and protect the safety of our communities.
Common Cause and our 1.5 million members and supporters are calling for the immediate removal of ICE from our communities to bring an end to the violence and chaos in America. We have called on Congress to hold emergency oversight hearings on ICE’s practices.
