Trump to Become First Convicted Felon to Serve as President

Today, President-elect Trump was sentenced by a New York state court on 34 felony convictions. The following is a statement from Common Cause President & CEO Virginia Kase Solomón:

In ten days, Donald Trump will become the first convicted felon to take the oath and serve as President of the United States. In 2018, Common Cause sounded the alarm and filed the first federal complaints against the president-elect related to these payments. That’s because his campaign’s payment to Stormy Daniels was a clear violation of campaign finance law as he sought to sway the outcome of his election.

Despite Trump’s attempts to keep vital information from the public, our accountability work has made sure the nation, and the world, knows he is a felon on 34 counts.

Common Cause will continue to work to hold Donald Trump accountable as he begins his second term. There are troubling signs already about his second administration but we stand ready to continue our role as watchdog for the people of the United States.
