Sacramento, CA – Common Cause issued the following statement after voters in California received a mailer from “Protect Voters First” about the November redistricting ballot initiative. The mailer includes a quote from Common Cause California Executive Director Darius Kemp, wrongly implying that Common Cause is part of this coalition.

“Common Cause is in no way affiliated with Protect Voters First and did not authorize this mailer. Our position on mid-cycle redistricting is clear — we will not oppose mid-cycle redistricting efforts in states that meet our six fairness criteria. However, any states that refuse to comply with our criteria will meet strong people-powered opposition.”

“California’s proposal meets our organization’s fairness criteria; therefore, our focus here will remain on election protection, voter education, and voter empowerment in the lead up to November 4.”
