Americans also soundly reject mid-decade redistricting.<\/span>\r\n\r\nWhile mid-decade redistricting is not currently being discussed in Pennsylvania, a state constitutional amendment to create an independent commission to draw district lines has been introduced in the General Assembly. The amendment, introduced <\/span>as <\/span>HB 31 in the House and SB 131 in the Senate, has bipartisan support in both legislative chambers.<\/span>\r\n\r\n\u201cOur poll shows the public does not trust politicians when it comes to redistricting and Pennsylvanians of all political backgrounds want the pen in their own hands,\" said<\/span> Philip Hensley-Robin, Executive Director for Common Cause Pennsylvania.<\/span><\/b> \u201cIt\u2019s time for the legislature to listen to the people and pass the independent commissions amendment. That\u2019s the only way to ensure that corrupt power grabs, like the mid-decade redistricting we\u2019re seeing in Texas, can never happen in Pennsylvania.\u201d<\/span>\r\n\r\nCommon Cause commissioned Noble Predictive Insights to conduct an in-depth national poll that clearly shows<\/span> all Americans reject partisan mid-decade redistricting. During August 26 \u2013 September 2, the poll surveyed more than 2,000 registered voters nationally and an additional 400 to 500 registered voters in five states.<\/span>\r\n\r\nIn July, President Trump sparked this crisis by pressuring Texas lawmakers to gerrymander their maps to pick up five extra Republican U.S. House seats ahead of the 2026 election. But our polling shows most Americans, including Republicans, oppose both mid-decade redistricting and partisan gerrymandering. That\u2019s why Common Cause released Fairness Criteria to guide states looking to counterbalance Trump\u2019s anti-democratic push without sacrificing long-term reforms for fair representation, like independent redistricting.
