","featured_image":"","press_type":146,"authors":["{\"site_id\":\"1\",\"post_type\":\"person\",\"post_id\":7876}"],"related_issues":[86,109,420],"related_work":false,"location":38},"sidebar":{"helper_enable_sidebar":false,"helper_media_contact":{"heading":"Media Contact","manually_enter_person":false,"person":null,"name":"","role":"","phone":"","email":""},"helper_links_downloads":{"heading":"Links & Downloads","links":null}},"page_layout":[{"acf_fc_layout":"layout_wysiwyg","_acfe_flexible_toggle":null,"component_wysiwyg":{"content":"<h3 style=\"text-align: center\"><b>Sham Committee Shuts Down Testimony, Passes Harmful Resolution with Slim Majority<\/b><\/h3>\r\n<b>COLUMBUS, OH <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2014 In a narrow 7-6 vote, the Ohio House Constitutional Resolutions Committee passed a resolution allowing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.legislature.ohio.gov\/legislation\/135\/hjr1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">HJR 1<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u2014 a bill that seeks to increase the ballot threshold for amending the constitution from a simple majority to 60% \u2014 to a floor vote.<\/span>\r\n\r\nFollowing the resolution\u2019s passage, a denial of 111 years of direct democracy rights, <b>Catherine Turcer, executive director of Common Cause Ohio<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, made the following statement representing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commoncause.org\/ohio\/democracy-wire\/direct-democracy-is-under-attack-statewide-opposition-continues-to-grow-for-hjr1-and-sjr2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">a growing coalition of 227 organizations<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">in opposition to a 60 percent threshold and an August special election for special interests.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cSince 1912, Ohioans from across the political spectrum have utilized the right to amend our Constitution via the petition process. Direct democracy gives voters the ability to make a real impact and has helped engage Ohioans in the political process. There is no justifiable reason, after over 100 years, to make this already challenging process even harder.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cToday, a sham committee shut down public testimony in opposition. This is not what democracy should look like. Extreme lawmakers <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ohiohouse.gov\/committees\/constitutional-resolutions\/meetings\/cmte_h_constitutional_resolutions_1_2023-04-19-0900_356\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">turned away over 100 Ohioans<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> who took time from their day to show up and testify in opposition. Committee Chair Phil Plummer clearly did not want to hear from voters. He and an ultra-slim margin of his anti-voter colleagues had already made up their minds, and they bullied this bad idea out of committee.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe have a growing coalition of 227 organizations representing hundreds of thousands of voters who will not compromise the sacred principle of one person, one vote. In Ohio and this country, a simple majority means 50 plus one equals democracy. We will not allow this undemocratic, unfair, unnecessary, and unpopular attack on voting rights and freedom to stand.\u201d<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Additionally, the Ohio Senate passed <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.legislature.ohio.gov\/legislation\/135\/sjr2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Senate Joint Resolution 2<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> this afternoon, which also changes the threshold for passage of amendments to the Ohio Constitution to 60 percent. Similar to HJR 1, this measure makes the citizen initiative process more difficult by requiring 5% of the gubernatorial vote in all 88 counties.
