{"id":374,"date":"2023-11-14T02:55:24","date_gmt":"2023-11-14T02:55:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.commoncause.org\/ohio\/articles\/ohio-state-representatives-need-to-hear-from-you-they-speak-for-us\/"},"modified":"2023-11-14T02:55:24","modified_gmt":"2023-11-14T02:55:24","slug":"ohio-state-representatives-need-to-hear-from-you-they-speak-for-us","status":"publish","type":"article","link":"https:\/\/www.commoncause.org\/ohio\/articles\/ohio-state-representatives-need-to-hear-from-you-they-speak-for-us\/","title":{"rendered":"Ohio State Representatives Need to Hear From You – They Speak for Us"},"template":"","class_list":["post-374","article","type-article","status-publish","hentry","article_type-blog-post"],"acf":{"details":{"summary":"","featured_image":null,"article_type":153,"authors":null,"related_issues":false,"related_work":false,"location":null},"sidebar":{"helper_enable_sidebar":false,"helper_media_contact":{"heading":"Media Contact","manually_enter_person":false,"person":null,"name":"","role":"","phone":"","email":""},"helper_links_downloads":{"heading":"Links & Downloads","links":null}},"page_layout":[{"acf_fc_layout":"layout_wysiwyg","_acfe_flexible_toggle":null,"component_wysiwyg":{"content":"After the will of Ohio voters was voiced loud and clear on abortion access last week, state legislative leaders are vowing to still restrict it.\u00a0 Ohio voters approved putting reproductive rights in the Ohio Constitution (57-43%), but on Election night, Ohio House Speaker Jason Stephens said, \u201cThe legislature has multiple paths that we will explore to continue to protect innocent life.\u201d<\/span>\r\n\r\nEarlier this year, the state legislature attempted to grab power from the voters.\u00a0 In August, Ohioans stood up for democracy and for our right to go directly to voters when the state legislature<\/span> is unresponsive to the needs and concerns of the majority.<\/span>\r\n\r\nAnd now the Ohio Supreme Court is under attack!\u00a0<\/b>\r\n\r\nThe unaccountable Ohio General Assembly has failed to reflect the will of voters for years and now some legislators are proposing that they determine what is constitutional, rather than the courts.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nNow four legislators want to remove jurisdiction from the courts. A <\/span>Friday press release<\/span><\/a> from State Reps. Jennifer Gross (R-West Chester), Bill Dean (R-Xenia), Melanie Miller (R-Ashland), and Beth Lear (R-Galena) said that, \u201cThe Ohio legislature alone will consider what, if any modifications to make to existing laws based on public hearings and input from legal experts on both sides.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\r\n

TAKE ACTION<\/b><\/a><\/h3>\r\nState legislative leaders have a clear pattern of disregarding and disrespecting the voters, the Ohio Constitution, and the Ohio Supreme Court.<\/span>\r\n\r\nIn 2015, Ohioans overwhelmingly approved prohibitions on state legislative gerrymandering. In 2018, nearly 75% voted to put these prohibitions in the Ohio Constitution for congressional districts.\u00a0 The Ohio Supreme Court struck down as unconstitutional gerrymanders two congressional maps and five sets of state legislative maps.<\/span>\r\n\r\nWe must remind those who represent us that they are accountable to us. <\/span>Urge your state representative to respect the will of voters and the checks and balances established in the Ohio Constitution.\u00a0 TAKE ACTION TODAY!<\/b><\/a>\r\n\r\nThey can\u2019t get away with this attack on voters and the courts.
