The slides have additional live links, but below you can see a summary of the topics we covered.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Unfortunately, we had another hacking incident. It\u2019s upsetting. We will be increasing our security and sending a new link for each Huddle meeting.)\u00a0<\/span><\/i>\r\n\r\n<b>HJR1 update\u00a0<\/b>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although a large coalition (including Fair Districts) successfully pushed back against HJR6 in December, Rep Brian Stewart introduced <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ohiohouse.gov\/members\/brian-stewart\/news\/stewart-reintroduces-ohio-constitution-protection-amendment-113094\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a new proposal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to make it harder to pass ballot initiatives (now \u201cHJR1\u201d) and this version is even worse. The bill will NOT be on the ballot in May, but we fear it could end up on the November Ballot. We are pushing back with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1eiE1cD2jkLfrWSder-rv_hT_SWWajh-V\/view?usp=sharing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">messaging<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that reiterates that the bill is \u201cUnfair, Undemocratic, unpopular, and unnecessary.\u201d Here are two op-eds and some research on the topic:<\/span>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dispatch.com\/story\/opinion\/columns\/guest\/2022\/12\/12\/what-could-move-to-make-it-harder-to-change-ohio-constitution-mean-mike-curtain-columbus\/69716192007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 'historic abuse of power,' Ohio lawmakers seek to steal your voice,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Mike Curtin, Columbus Dispatch, 12\/12\/22\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cleveland.com\/opinion\/2023\/02\/flawed-effort-to-make-it-harder-to-amend-ohio-constitution-will-be-back-michael-curtin.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flawed effort to make it harder to amend Ohio Constitution will be back, <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mike Curtin, Cleveland.com, 2\/3\/23<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/files.constantcontact.com\/1ace74c5501\/c5331bb2-3b07-404f-8637-37c86b0a0b9f.pdf?rdr=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research on the passage rate of bond measures<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<b>GOP lawsuit at SCOTUS\u00a0<\/b>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Back in October, Senate President Matt Huffman filed a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scotusblog.com\/case-files\/cases\/huffman-v-neiman\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">petition<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with SCOTUS claiming the Ohio Supreme Court overstepped its bounds when striking down Ohio\u2019s redrawn Congressional map. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LWV\/ACLU countered (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scotusblog.com\/case-files\/cases\/huffman-v-neiman\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Huffman v. Neiman<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) in December, 2022. On February 17, 2023 SCOTUS may say whether it plans to hear or dismiss the case.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, the recently flipped North Carolina Supreme Court may reopen the case that led to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moore v Harper<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014which in turn could lead to SCOTUS dropping the case altogether. While it is too early to say what will happen, these cases are all connected and will impact each other one way or another. We are hoping many of our community mappers will get involved again. Catherine Turcer from Common Cause Ohio discussed the kinds of in depth work that needs to be done before we get started, including raising money, crafting ballot language (with public input), and building a strong and unified coalition. In addition, we would need to make sure that the language we use fits with whatever decision comes down in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moore v Harper.\u00a0<\/span><\/i>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the preparation work is going on, we will begin to build our capacity and outreach so that more Ohioans support meaningful redistricting reform. That will include such things as rebooting the Speakers Bureau, social media outreach and education campaigns, gathering public input, and fundraising. Look out for details on these efforts at future Huddle meetings.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<b>Chief Justice Maureen O\u2019Connor\u00a0<\/b>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.supremecourt.ohio.gov\/rod\/docs\/pdf\/0\/2022\/2022-ohio-65.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">first opinion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> striking down a gerrymandered map, Chief Justice O\u2019Connor has spoken up in favor of a truly independent redistricting commission. Since her retirement in December she has been talking about heading up an effort to change Ohio\u2019s redistricting rules. Here is a video of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/aStoq3Cgv0M\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">comments<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> she made at a recent Columbus Metropolitan Club meeting. We are all working towards the same goal and certainly aim to be working together on a single ballot initiative.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<b>Householder trial update<\/b>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common Cause Ohio has been working hard to shed light on the Householder HB 6 trial and the reforms we need to make sure these kinds of scandals cannot keep happening over and over in Ohio.
