{"id":307,"date":"2022-05-31T10:00:28","date_gmt":"2022-05-31T10:00:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.commoncause.org\/ohio\/articles\/voters-left-with-maps-the-ohio-supreme-court-struck-down-twice\/"},"modified":"2022-05-31T10:00:28","modified_gmt":"2022-05-31T10:00:28","slug":"voters-left-with-maps-the-ohio-supreme-court-struck-down-twice","status":"publish","type":"article","link":"https:\/\/www.commoncause.org\/ohio\/articles\/voters-left-with-maps-the-ohio-supreme-court-struck-down-twice\/","title":{"rendered":"Voters Left with Maps the Ohio Supreme Court Struck Down Twice"},"template":"","class_list":["post-307","article","type-article","status-publish","hentry","article_type-blog-post"],"acf":{"details":{"summary":"","featured_image":null,"article_type":153,"authors":null,"related_issues":[62,420],"related_work":false,"location":null},"sidebar":{"helper_enable_sidebar":false,"helper_media_contact":{"heading":"Media Contact","manually_enter_person":false,"person":null,"name":"","role":"","phone":"","email":""},"helper_links_downloads":{"heading":"Links & Downloads","links":null}},"page_layout":[{"acf_fc_layout":"layout_wysiwyg","_acfe_flexible_toggle":null,"component_wysiwyg":{"content":"<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Last Wednesday, it was no surprise that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.supremecourt.ohio.gov\/rod\/docs\/pdf\/0\/2022\/2022-Ohio-1727.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the Ohio Supreme Court struck down the fifth set of General Assembly maps<\/span> <\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">adopted by the Ohio Redistricting Commission. These Ohio House and Senate maps are identical to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commoncause.org\/ohio\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2022\/05\/22422-GA-Maps.png\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">third set of maps<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> that the same court struck down on March 16.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Unfortunately, that\u2019s not the end of the story. On Friday, ACLU Ohio filed a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">motion asking the federal court to extend the legislative map decision to June 6, the date that the Ohio Supreme Court ordered for new state legislative maps. This would have meant new voting districts rather than using maps that have already been rejected. But later that day, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">a federal panel established <\/span><b>Aug. 2 as the new primary date for the state legislative races.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Not only that, but they also ordered the state to use the Ohio House and Senate maps created in February (the third and fifth maps created by the Ohio Redistricting Commission.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<b>Sadly, this marks the end for fair maps for this year\u2019s elections. The majority party\u2019s strategy of repeatedly submitting gerrymandered maps while running out the clock has worked well for the GOP members of the Ohio Redistricting Commission.\u00a0<\/b>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ohio voters put new rules into the Ohio Constitution and participated in hearings and provided hours and hours of testimony. The reforms were a compromise AND a promise to the voters. It is clear that those drunk on power prioritized their party\u2019s future over the people\u2019s voices and the Ohio Constitution.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In fact, Sen. President Matt Huffman (R-Lima)<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dispatch.com\/story\/news\/2022\/05\/19\/meet-matt-huffman-the-lima-republican-who-runs-ohio\/7269099001\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> described the process this way to the Columbus Dispatch<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">:<\/span>\r\n\r\n<b>\u201cWe can kind of do what we want.\u201d\u00a0<\/b>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It\u2019s time to take the keys away from leaders who choose party over people. Elected officials have proven that they can\u2019t be trusted with the creation of voting districts.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<b>Chief Justice Maureen O\u2019Connor has a recommendation for us:<\/b>\r\n\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWhile not free from their own vulnerabilities, independent redistricting commissions have become \u2018the premier institutional solution to the problem of partisan gerrymandering\u2019 because they increase the degree of separation between map-drawers and partisan politics. They shift the power to redistrict away from partisan actors who have an incentive to gerrymander in order to maintain or expand their political power.\u201d<\/span><\/i>\r\n\r\n<b>We are not done fighting for fair districts and fair elections!
