The ORC and the OGA bet they could get away with murder when they ignored the new rules and drew such grotesquely rigged maps\u2014and they lost that bet. It turns out those rules had enough teeth to bite the gerrymanderers where it hurts.<\/span>\r\n\r\nThe signatures gathered by Fair Districts advocates created enough pressure to get those amendments on the ballot and then into the Ohio Constitution. <b>Thank you!<\/b>\r\n\r\n<b>Fair Districts sent a letter to the commission on 1\/18\/2022 encouraging them to act quickly to draw constitutionally compliant maps.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> You can read our letter <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commoncause.org\/ohio\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2022\/01\/Fair-Districts-letter-to-the-ORC.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">HERE<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. The OGA has 30 days to try to draw a map. If they fail, the task goes back to the ORC which will have another 30 days. Nevertheless, we still want them to get to work quickly so we have the least possible disruption to filing deadlines and primary dates.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h3><strong>Ohio Redistricting Commission Public Hearings<\/strong><\/h3>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The next meeting of the Ohio Redistricting Commission is <strong>Saturday,<\/strong> <strong>January 22 at 9:30 AM<\/strong> in the Ohio House Finance Hearing Room (Room 313); Ohio Statehouse, 1 Capitol Square, Columbus. (<a href=\"https:\/\/redistricting.ohio.gov\/meetings\/mailing-list-sign-up\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Please subscribe<\/a> to updates from the commission to receive notification if the start time of the meeting is delayed.) You can watch the meetings (past and live) at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohiochannel.org\/collections\/ohio-redistricting-commission\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ohio Channel<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nCheck the Ohio Redistricting Commission website <a href=\"https:\/\/redistricting.ohio.gov\/meetings\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">meeting tab<\/a> to see map submissions from the caucuses to see what is being discussed and to see announcements about upcoming meetings.\r\n\r\n<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>T<\/strong><b>he Commission is only allowing public testimony to be submitted in conjunction with a specific hearing date at which public testimony is allowed<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Anything you sent\/send to commission members outside of those parameters will be considered \u201cinput\u201d rather than testimony. In other words, since no hearings have been announced to date with public testimony on the agenda, nothing you have submitted so far will be counted as \u201ctestimony\u201d although it has been noted as \u201cinput.\u201d (ARG.
