North Carolina lawmakers are considering not only a spate of new election restrictions but also a major overhaul of state and county-level election boards, alarming advocates who say some of the proposals could grind the state’s democratic apparatus to a halt.

“We are still in a five-alarm fire here in North Carolina,” said Gino Nuzzolillo, campaign manager for the state’s Common Cause branch.

"These changes will bind elections in ways that are costly for counties, chaotic for voters, and calamitous for our election," said Sailor Jones of Common Cause North Carolina.

The limited option “endangers North Carolinians’ favorite way to vote, forces working voters to drive long distances, and produces overwhelmingly long lines during any available voting hours,” Sailor Jones, associate director of Common Cause North Carolina said at a news conference

“This is not about Republicans versus Democrats,” Rotrina Campbell, organization manager with Common Cause NC, said during Tuesday’s press conference. “It’s about protecting our democracy against attacks from anti-voter extremists.”
