Report: North Carolina Earns “F” for 2021 Redistricting from Common Cause

“It comes as no surprise that North Carolina landed at the bottom of the barrel for the 2021 redistricting process. That year, politicians in the legislature ignored the voices of North Carolinians and drew discriminatory voting maps."

Common Cause v. Lewis

Common Cause successfully challenged North Carolina’s state legislative map. After some of the map was struck down as an unconstitutional racial gerrymander in 2017, leaders in the legislature announced they would redraw districts on partisan grounds. On September 3, 2019, a three-judge trial court struck down the districts as a violation of the North Carolina Constitution.

Federal District Court Affirms Landmark Ruling Against Partisan Gerrymandering in North Carolina

RALEIGH, NC – A three-judge federal district court panel in Greensboro again ruled in Common Cause v. Rucho that the NC General Assembly violated the U.S. Constitution in 2016 when legislators manipulated congressional districts for partisan advantage. Appeals of three-judge panel redistricting decisions go directly to the U.S. Supreme Court, so the case could be heard there in the next year.
