2026 NC Elections Funding/Early Voting Advocacy Training
EVENT TIME: Wednesday, April 22 at 6pm – 7:15pm
EVENT LOCATION: Virtually on Zoom (register here)
About this event
For our elections to run smoothly and provide the best experience to voters, they must be adequately funded. County commissions across North Carolina will hold public hearings in the coming weeks to discuss their county budgets for the new fiscal year. The funding they provide for County Boards of Elections will have a significant impact on voters’ experiences in this year’s general elections.
Early voting is the most popular way to vote in North Carolina and for good reason. Voters can vote at any early voting site in their county and can register and vote on the same day (you can’t register and vote on Election Day in NC). This makes early voting particularly important for college students. Deciding early voting plans are some the most contentious decisions County Boards of Elections make.
From early voting sites to voting equipment to salaries for elections staff, it all has to be funded. Join us as we explain how North Carolina elections are funded and what you can do to advocate for well-funded elections and robust, equitable early voting plans in your county.

2026 Early Voting Advocacy

County boards of elections approve early voting locations and hours for their county’s elections. Where county boards of elections don’t come to a unanimous agreement on an early voting plan, the State Board of Elections has the final say.
After the primary election, county boards of elections will consider early voting plans for the fall general election. Stay tuned for information on how you can advocate for robust early voting access in your county for the general election.
Speak out in favor of early voting access that works for voters in your county, including:
- Expanding/maintaining weekend options, including Saturday and Sunday voting
- Locations near public transit
- Locations on or in close proximity to colleges and universities
- Sites serving traditionally marginalized communities
