Early Voting

  • Early Voting runs from Saturday, October 28th through Sunday, November 5th (hours vary).
    • There is no Early Voting on Monday, November 6th.
  • Thanks to new legislation, eligible New Yorkers will be able to register to vote in person at a poll site and vote by affidavit ballot at their polling place all in the same day — the first day of Early Voting on Saturday, October 28th. Voter registration eligibility will be confirmed before their ballots are counted.

  • Polls will be open from 6 am – 9 pm.

  • If you are in line when the polls close, you can still vote! 
  • If you’re a registered voter and you arrive at the poll site, but your name is not on the rolls, cast an affidavit ballot. Your vote may count and your registration will be automatically updated.

Absentee Voting 

  • All New York residents are eligible to vote absentee due to COVID-19. The deadlines to request an absentee ballot are:
  • You can turn in your absentee ballot by:
    • Mailing it and ensuring it is postmarked no later than Tuesday, November 7th.
      • Return postage IS prepaid.
      • Please Note: The Board of Elections must received your absentee ballot by Tuesday, November 14th.
    • Bringing it to your County Board of Elections Office no later than Tuesday, November 7th by 9 pm.
    • Bringing it to an Early Voting poll site in your county between October 28th and November 5th.
    • Bringing it to a poll site in your county on November 7th by 9 pm.

  • Please note: Due to changes in the law, New Yorkers are no longer able to cast ballots on voting machines if they have requested an absentee ballot. If you requested an absentee ballot and end up choosing to vote in person during Early Voting or on Election Day, you will be issued an affidavit at your polling location. Your affidavit ballot will be kept separate until the election is completed, and if your absentee ballot has been received by the Board of Elections, the affidavit ballot will not be counted.

  • There is no voter ID law in NYS, you do not need to bring an ID to vote.
  • Check to see what’s on your ballot before you go to make sure you receive the ballot you’re entitled to:
  • All New Yorkers will vote on two ballot proposals, as well as local elections happening in their area. New York City residents will also vote for their City Council Member this year due to the redistricting process that happens every ten years.
  • New York City voters: ​​You will not be able to use Ranked Choice Voting in the general election.
