The vote came despite\u00a0demand for reform,\u00a0rallies,\u00a0and\u00a0months\u00a0of public comment from the\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>Ranked\u00a0Choice Voting ABQ<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0coalition,\u00a0representing\u00a012 diverse community organizations<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0led by Common Cause New Mexico.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nThe rejection of the measure means Albuquerque will remain tied to an outdated and expensive runoff system that\u00a0on average\u00a0costs taxpayers over one million dollars per cycle and\u00a0yields\u00a0dismal voter turnout. While other major New Mexico municipalities like Santa Fe and Las Cruces have successfully implemented RCV to save money and improve representation, Albuquerque\u2019s leadership has chosen to\u00a0maintain\u00a0the status quo.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\r\n

Statement from Molly Swank, Common Cause\u2019s New Mexico Director:<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n\u201cTonight,\u00a0the City Council has chosen to ignore the voices of their constituents and\u00a0instead will\u00a0continue wasting millions of taxpayer dollars on unnecessary runoff elections.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nRanked\u00a0choice\u00a0voting is a proven tool that makes elections more inclusive and less divisive, yet tonight, our leaders chose to stick with a broken system. While this vote is a setback, our coalition\u00a0remains\u00a0committed\u00a0to bringing modern, fair, and representative elections to Albuquerque.
