\r\n\r\nWashington, D.C.<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0U.S. Senator Ben Ray Luj\u00e1n (D-N.M.) introduced the Fair and Clear Campaign (FCC) Transparency Act to bolster transparency and accountability in political advertising. Senator Luj\u00e1n previously introduced the legislation in the House of Representatives during the 116th<\/sup>\u00a0Congress.\r\n\r\nThe\u00a0FCC Transparency Act\u00a0would require that the Federal Communications Commission maintain broadcast stations\u2019 public files about political time sold or given away in a machine-readable format. Currently, this information is not made available in an accessible way, which undermines the public\u2019s ability to know who is funding political advertisements.\r\n\r\n\u201cFor too long, unscrupulous actors could hide behind dark money in political advertising with little to no accountability. It\u2019s time to raise the curtain and empower voters to understand who is fronting political advertisements \u2013 often riddled with misleading or untrue claims \u2013 during our elections,\u201d\u00a0said Luj\u00e1n.<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cThis legislation is about transparency and ensuring that Americans have meaningful access to public information before heading to the ballot box.\u201d\r\n\r\nThe FCC Transparency Act is endorsed by Common Cause, Common Cause New Mexico, and End Citizens United\/Let America Vote Action Fund.\r\n\r\n\u201cSenator Luj\u00e1n\u2019s \u201cFair and Clear Campaign Transparency Act\u201d is a common-sense step to improve how Americans can learn more about who is purchasing political advertisements and the resulting political influence,\u201d\u00a0said Karen Hobert Flynn, president of Common Cause<\/strong>. \u201cThe available data about who is purchasing these political advertisements is only as good as it is usable. This bill would make public inspection file information more accessible and transparent for online users by ensuring that it is machine readable.
