SANTA FE, NM — Common Cause New Mexico is expanding its grassroots organizing presence in the state, welcoming Cesar Marquez as its new Senior Organizer. In this role, Marquez will focus on organizing to build people power, champion pro-democracy policies, increase government transparency, and strengthen New Mexico’s election system.

“Community organizing is about making sure people are heard and empowering them to get involved to shape the future of our state and our communities,” said Marquez. “We’re living in a critical moment where many people feel disconnected from their government and disillusioned with politics. That’s exactly why our work matters, because when people come together, we can create a system that truly represents us.”

Marquez has been organizing for the past five years in Nevada, where he led efforts to pass a statewide ballot initiative to implement open primaries and ranked-choice voting. His work has centered on building broad, diverse coalitions and increasing civic participation among young voters, Latino voters, independent voters, and other underrepresented communities.

“New Mexico is a critical player in the national fight for a fairer, more inclusive democracy,” said Molly Swank, executive director of Common Cause New Mexico. “We are thrilled to have Cesar leading our organizing efforts to ensure that every New Mexican is engaged in our democracy and has an equal say in our collective future.”

Marquez earned a bachelors degree in industrial engineering from Purdue University and spent eight years in manufacturing and operations, where he honed his leadership and organizing talents. He brings a strong background in electoral reform, strategic campaigning, and grassroots power building, and is eager to continue this work to help everyday New Mexicans get involved in shaping the policies that impact their lives.
