Advocating for Accessible Elections

There's a lot we can do to improve how our elections work. Reforms are being implemented across the country that could make voting more accessible for every Nebraskan.

Together, we are supporting commonsense updates to our elections to ensure that more eligible Nebraskans can register, vote, and have their voices heard. By supporting these policies, we can strengthen our democracy, increase voter participation, and ensure that every voice is heard. Join us in advocating for these important reforms and help build a more inclusive and representative democracy for all.

Policies to Improve Our Elections

Automatic Voter Registration

Automatic voter registration (AVR) is a transformative policy that streamlines the voter registration process, making it more accessible and inclusive. With AVR, eligible citizens are automatically registered to vote when they interact with government agencies like the Department of Motor Vehicles or public assistance offices, unless they opt out. This ensures that more people have the opportunity to participate in our democracy, leading to a more representative government that truly reflects the will of the people.

Ranked-Choice Voting

Ranked-choice voting (RCV) is a fair and innovative electoral reform that allows voters to rank candidates in order of preference. If no candidate receives a majority of first-choice votes, the candidate with the fewest votes is eliminated, and their votes are redistributed based on the voters’ next preferences. This process continues until one candidate has a majority of votes. RCV encourages candidates to appeal to a broader range of voters and ensures that the winner has the support of the majority, leading to more positive and inclusive campaigns and outcomes.

Open Primaries

Open primaries are a reform that allows all voters, regardless of their party affiliation, to participate in primary elections. In open primaries, voters can choose to vote for any candidate, regardless of the candidate’s party affiliation. This increases voter turnout, encourages candidates to appeal to a broader base of voters, and fosters a more inclusive political process that better represents the diversity of views in our communities.

Same Day Voter Registration

Same day voter registration would enable eligible Nebraskans to register to vote and cast their ballot on the same day. This policy eliminates barriers for those who miss the traditional registration deadlines, ensuring that more people can participate in our elections. Same day registration helps increase voter turnout and ensures that last-minute changes in eligibility or personal circumstances do not prevent citizens from exercising their right to vote.
