The bill is a huge step forward for voting rights in Minnesota and is the culmination of years of advocacy by Common Cause Minnesota and the Restore the Vote Coalition.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The MN Senate\u2019s bill follows the passage of its companion bill <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.revisor.mn.gov\/bills\/text.php?number=HF28&amp;type=ue&amp;version=1&amp;session=ls93&amp;session_year=2023&amp;session_number=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HF28<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which was moved with bipartisan support off the House floor. Currently, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncsl.org\/elections-and-campaigns\/felon-voting-rights\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">21 states<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> allow people with felonies to vote immediately following the end of their incarceration. In contrast, Minnesota only restores voting rights once an individual has completed their <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sentence<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including parole and\/or probation.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis bill means protecting the most important and sacred right we share as Americans, our right to vote,\u201d said <\/span><b>Annastacia Belladonna-Carrera, executive director of CCMN. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cRegardless of their record, Minnesotans deserve the opportunity to swiftly participate in our democratic process after the incarceration process has ended.\"<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/restorethevotemn.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Restore the Vote<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> coalition \u2014 a Minnesota-based coalition devoted to felon reenfranchisement of which CCMN is a member \u2014 recently held a rally in support of SF26. CCMN and the coalition have worked on voting restoration for years, from filing an amicus brief in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Schroeder v. Minnesota Secretary of State<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to moving for legislative action within the state.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sentencingproject.org\/reports\/locked-out-2022-estimates-of-people-denied-voting-rights\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Locked Out 2022: Estimates of People Denied Voting Rights<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a Sentencing Project report, an estimated 4.6 million Americans with felony convictions were banned from voting, a statistic that translates to two percent of the population. 5.3 and 1.7 percent of Black and Latino communities respectively are disenfranchised due to these laws.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Minnesota will now be the 22nd state to allow automatic restoration after release.
