Common Cause Minnesota is calling on Senators Tina Smith and Amy Klobuchar to stop the SAVE Act after it narrowly passed the U.S. House of Representatives today.

The SAVE Act creates voter suppression by throwing up barriers for eligible Minnesotans to vote in our elections.

By imposing stringent proof of citizenship requirements and restricting voter registration to in-person only, the SAVE Act disproportionately affects marginalized Minnesotans, married individuals with a different last name than what is on their birth certificates, low-income Minnesotans and rural voters, particularly seniors. Additionally, Active-duty service members voting absentee face significant challenges if they cannot return to their local election offices to present the required documents. Creating layered barriers to voting and denying access to the ballot for legitimate voters is voter suppression. Baseless disinformation should not be shaping our election policy and laws, said Annastacia Belladona Carrera, Common Cause Minnesota Executive Director.
