LANSING –– Common Cause Michigan today issued the following statement commending the State Senate for deciding not to take up the House’s highly restrictive voter ID bills during this lame duck session:

“Voting is the cornerstone of our democracy and brings us together as Americans.  We applaud Senate Majority Leader Meekhof for deciding not to take up last-minute House bills that would have disenfranchised thousands of voters who cannot readily produce a government issued ID or birth certificate.  These bills would have done nothing to protect voting integrity and would have hit seniors, the disabled, students, and people of color particularly hard.   We should never be making it harder to vote in Michigan.  We will remain vigilant against future attacks on citizen’s right to vote and will continue to push for measures to improve access to voting so everyone has a voice in our democracy,” said Dan Farough, spokesman on behalf of Common Cause Michigan.
