Greenbelt, MD<\/span><\/span>\u00a0-\u00a0<\/span><\/span>In a major win for fair representation, Greenbelt residents\u00a0<\/span><\/span>voted\u00a0<\/span>to adopt\u00a0<\/span>ranked<\/span>\u00a0choice voting<\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0for all city council elections. Greenbelt joins more than 50\u00a0<\/span>jurisdictions<\/span>\u00a0nationwide that use ranked choice voting in public elections.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u201cGreenbelt voters have spoken\u00a0<\/span>loud<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>clear<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u2013\u00a0 they<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>want every<\/span>\u00a0voice to be heard and every vote to count<\/span>,\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0said Joanne Antoine, executive director, Common Cause Maryland.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u201cAdopting ranked choice voting puts more power back into the hands of Greenbelt residents.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u201cAt a time of polarized politics, Greenbelt is embracing consensus and coalition building,\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/span>said Michelle Whittaker, executive director, Ranked Choice Voting Maryland.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u201cVoters will be able to fully express their choices in elections, and more communities will have a seat at the table.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

With ranked choice voting, residents will now have the power to rank candidates in order of preference.<\/span>\u00a0For a multi-seat election, candidates win by reaching the vote share threshold for the number of seats being elected.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n
