The council adopted their secret map over the 2025 Redistricting Commission\u2019s proposed map, which would have better represented Baltimore County\u2019s diverse communities and had significant public input.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nThe move was a slap in the face\u00a0to\u00a0Baltimore County residents who\u00a0have worked for years to expand the size of the council in hopes that they would finally get the representation that they\u00a0deserve.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nMany people are rightfully upset, frustrated, and losing faith in the process. The Baltimore County Council failed us, and now,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0time to hold them accountable.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nCommon Cause Maryland is\u00a0assessing all options on the table, but\u00a0the need for one\u00a0option\u00a0is clear:\u00a0pass the Maryland Voting Rights Act.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nOur vote is our voice, and we need our voice now more than ever before. The Maryland Voting Rights Act will\u00a0ensure all voters are able to cast meaningful ballots and\u00a0participate\u00a0freely\u00a0and fairly in our democratic process.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nBy passing a gerrymandered map, the Baltimore County Council\u00a0demonstrated\u00a0they\u00a0will\u00a0do everything they can to break up our communities of color to limit their political power.\u00a0That\u2019s\u00a0why we need protections at the ballot box, to\u00a0ensure that despite this gerrymandered map, Black and brown voters can still have their voices\u00a0heard. We need to make sure we can still hold our\u00a0council members\u00a0accountable for betraying our trust and our interests. We need the Maryland Voting Rights Act\u00a0(MDVRA)\u00a0now.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nThe MDVRA would ban racial vote dilution, which happens when an election system or other policies deny voters of color an equal opportunity to elect candidates they support. This means voters of color can cast ballots, but their votes\u00a0don't\u00a0have equal power to elect the\u00a0candidates\u00a0their\u00a0communities\u00a0support. This is exactly what happened in Baltimore County.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nWe won\u2019t let this frustrating setback silence our voices and our power.
