Marylanders voted for a commonsense, pro-democracy reform. They voted for a ballot initiative that gives eligible voters the right to register, update their registration, and vote on every Election Day in the future.

The Washington Post, Baltimore Sun and other local newspapers have sued the state of Maryland to avoid complying with the state’s campaign finance disclosure law, a measure that allows Maryland citizens to easily obtain meaningful information about groups and individuals seeking to influence their vote through ads run on their publications’ online platforms. Common Cause Maryland and the Campaign Legal Center filed a brief in U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland, arguing that the state should enforce its campaign finance disclosure law.

Mayor Catherine Pugh today signed Council Bill 18-0229, a charter amendment to establish the Fair Elections Fund and Citizen Commission.

Baltimore – The cost to run for office in Baltimore City rose over 20% between the last two elections, according to research released today by Common Cause Maryland. This spike was true of both the Mayoral race, where winner Catherine Pugh raised nearly $280,000, and Council races, where the average candidate raised over $185,000.
