U.S. Supreme Court Wrongly Endorses Maryland’s Partisan Gerrymander
ANNAPOLIS MD – Today the U.S. Supreme Court issued a 5-4 decision in two landmark redistricting cases, one being Maryland case Lamone v. Benisek. The majority concluded it could not set a constitutional standard against partisan gerrymandering.
Statement from Common Cause Maryland Executive Director, Joanne Antoine:
“The Supreme Court has shown that it is out of touch with the American people by failing to uphold the district court’s decision to overturn Maryland’s rigged congressional map as an unconstitutional partisan gerrymander. Everyday Marylanders know that democracy works best when every voice is heard, and every vote counts the same. We will continue to work with voters to set clear rules that ensure people pick their elected officials, not the politicians who rig the maps.”
The U.S. Supreme Court has put the power to fix gerrymandering back in the hands of the states. Common Cause Maryland will be working with members throughout the state to implement an Independent Redistricting Commission, ensuring lines are drawn fairly and districts represent the communities they serve. Take action!
