Common Cause Demands Accountability From DHS

We’re fighting back against the Trump administration’s violent ICE operations and its attacks on our civil rights.

In Minnesota and nationwide, the Trump administration has turned our government into a weapon to be used against the people. Donald Trump, Kristi Noem and the Department of Homeland Security have torn families apart, violated our civil rights, and killed our neighbors: at the time of writing, Renee Nicole Good, Alex Pretti, and six others have died in ICE’s custody or at the hands of ICE agents in 2026 alone.

This is not collateral damage. It is exactly what this administration wants to happen. They take pride in their cruelty, encourage these attacks on our civil rights, and welcome any distraction that takes attention away from the many ways they are failing to serve the American people.

Our Demands

  • A moratorium on all ICE surge operations in our communities, not just Minnesota.
  • The unconditional cooperation of the federal government with the local law enforcement agencies who are investigating the murders of Renee Good and Alex Pretti and other uses of force.
  • Resignation or presidential firing of top DHS leadership, including Kristi Noem.
  • A comprehensive Congressional investigation into federal immigration enforcement’s use of force and a NO vote on the upcoming DHS funding bill.

In a democracy, masked, armed men don’t roam the streets, harassing people for the color of their skin, attacking and killing peaceful observers, and operating with total impunity. To move forward, we must hold DHS and the Trump administration accountable, along with any other leaders who have failed to stand up for our rights.

First Things First: Fire Kristi Noem

Under Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem’s watch, ICE has terrorized neighborhoods across the country. They’ve invaded homes without warrants, targeted civilians of all immigration statuses, and even killed people – in addition to the tragic killings of Good and Pretti, last year was ICE’s deadliest year in two decades.

And every step of the way, Noem has rushed to defend DHS as these abuses come to light. She’s falsely labeled peaceful protestors as “domestic terrorists,” blamed local leaders for the violence that ICE has brought to their communities, supported agents’ use of masks to hide their identity, and defended numerous recorded incidents of force being unnecessarily used against civilians.

Noem has shown complete disregard for our laws, our civil rights, and our humanity. Removing her as the head of DHS isn’t a one-stop solution, but allowing her to remain in power guarantees more violence, more cover-ups, and more blank checks for abuse.

That’s why people across the country are demanding accountability. Add your name to demand the removal of Kristi Noem – and accountability for the ICE abuses she’s excusing and encouraging.

Congress – Including Congressional Democrats – Cannot Continue to Fund ICE

Congress has overwhelmingly looked the other way as the Trump administration sends ICE into our cities to execute the president’s cruel agenda, and too many representatives from both sides of the aisle have chosen to fuel their operations — seven Democrats joined nearly every Republican to hand ICE $10 billion to fund their terror campaign.

While Trump’s secret police behave as if they are above the law and his administration tries to convince us our eyes and ears are lying to us, these lawmakers are pretending that more money for body cameras or training will fix an agency that’s making us all less safe by design.

Pressure from the people, who say 아니요 to sending any more of our tax dollars to Trump’s personal police force while healthcare and food assistance are gutted, has already made a difference: Democratic leadership in the Senate has said it will block any funding package that includes more homeland security funding.

It is crucial to keep up the pressure and demand that these legislators keep their promise – now is not the time for cowardice. That’s why Common Cause is mobilizing to defend our communities and holding any representative that doesn’t do the same responsible.

Trump and His Administration Want to Distract Us, But We See the Big Picture

트럼프 행정부 thrives under chaos, all in the hopes that we won’t be able to connect the dots and call out their game.

But we see through the fragmentation and the distractions – all our fights are connected. We see that sending ICE into our communities to terrorize and brutalize the American people is part of a broader plan to take away our civil rights and hijack our democracy.

One of Attorney General Pam Bondi’s coercive demands to Minnesota leaders in exchange for calling off Trump’s secret police includes handing over millions of private voter records.

Minnesota isn’t the only state to receive this demand – the Department of Justice has demanded that most states hand over their voter files, databases that contain sensitive information and are mandated by law to remain in the hands of state officials. When several states didn’t comply, the DOJ sued them, prompting Common Cause to intervene and stand up to these unlawful demands.

Why does the Trump administration want these voter files? It all comes down to the midterms. This administration is hoping to rig the upcoming elections with anti-voter legislation, gerrymandered maps, and targeted voter purges to ensure that they never have to give up control. And they’re willing to do whatever it takes – including sending aggressive, militarized police forces into our cities – to clear their path.

This fight isn’t just about firing Kristi Noem, or former “Border Patrol Commander-at-Large” Greg Bovino, or even Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller. To truly protect our democracy, we must stand strong together and fight back in all avenues: peaceful protest in the streets, legal filings in the courtroom, and advocacy on Capitol Hill and in our state legislatures.

Common Cause’s fearless, peaceful, people-led movement is organizing to hold accountable any politician that fails to protect us.
